Vilsack to Speak at George Washington Carver Symposium
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will speak at the George Washington Carver Life and Legacy Symposium to be held Wednesday, April 23, in the Scheman Building. The symposium is part of a yearlong celebration honoring Carver for his many scientific discoveries, achievements and contributions.

Updated CSA Directory Puts More Iowa Producers on the Map
The Leopold Center and ISU Extension and Outreach have produced an updated directory, “Iowa CSA Farms: 2014 Statewide List of Iowa CSA Farms and Organizers.” It identifies local producers who operate Community Supported Agriculture enterprises that supply consumers with local, fresh, organic and sustainably produced food during the growing season.

Iowa Swine Day to Be Held June 26
ISU’s Iowa Swine Day will be held June 26, 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Scheman Building. Regional, national and international leaders in swine research, economics, veterinary medicine, production, animal welfare and the marketplace will address challenges facing the pork industry, animal science and consumers. Signs of Spring at the Research Farms
Last week most of the research farms reported rains followed by drying conditions. Those with livestock were spreading manure. All across Iowa research farms were busying seeding oats, applying fertilizer, doing tillage and many planted a little corn for their date-of-planting study.

Toth Uses Next-Generation Sequencing
Next-Generation Sequencing has allowed Amy Toth, ecology, evolution and organismal biology, to research how honey bees’ unusual sociality evolved. Next-Generation Sequencing allows researchers to sequence genes thousands of times faster than before. Toth’s research is highlighted in the spring 2014 issue of the Link, published by ISU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Sebranek and Beitz Honored by Iowa Academy of Sciences
Joe Sebranek and Don Beitz, animal science, were recognized at the annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Sciences on April 11. Sebranek was named a Distinguished Fellow and Beitz received the Distinguished Scientist Award.

Horse Judging Team Competes in Texas
The ISU Horse Judging Team competed at The Spring Contest in Gainesville, Texas, on April 15. Makayla Johnston, sophomore in agricultural and life sciences education, placed first in halter, second in reasons and second overall.

Block and Bridle Club Finish Strong at National Convention
The ISU Block and Bridle Club finished the year strong at the National Convention Banquet. The club placed first in Pride of School and Yearbook, and third in Webpage and Chapter Activities. Brady McNeil, graduate in animal science, received the 2012-13 Outstanding Senior award, and Brady Zuck the 2012-13 Outstanding Junior award.

ISU Alum to Discuss Wildlife Conservation, April 21
An ISU alumnus, who is chief veterinarian at the Houston Zoo, will speak about wildlife conservation tonight, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Joe Flanagan will present “That Horse Has Stripes! How Zoos and Veterinarians Are Helping to Save Wildlife.” More

CAST Presentation Discusses Food Security
The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology  and DuPont, in cooperation with The World Bank, will host a presentation by Jeff Simmons on May 1, 2:30 to 4 p.m. at The World Bank in Washington, D.C. Simmons, president of Elanco and the 2013 Borlaug CAST Communication Award recipient, will present “ENOUGH: The Fight for a Food-secure Tomorrow.” Following the presentation, CAST will announce the 2014 winner of the Communication Award.

ISU Pride Week, April 19-26
ISU Pride Week in April 19-26. Sponsored by the LGBTQA Faculty and Staff Association and the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost, the kickoff is today, April 21, 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gallery. There will be refreshments, highlights for each of the upcoming Pride Week events, and information about each of the LGBTQA+ organizations at ISU.

Led by CALS Staff and Students, ISU Men's Rugby Club Headed to National Sweet 16
Iowa State’s men’s rugby club, coached by Malcolm Robertson, program coordinator and lecturer for the Leopold Center, has qualified for the Sweet 16 round of the Division 1-AA national championship sanctioned by USA Rugby. The team faces Bowling Green University in an April 26 contest in Bowling Green, Ohio. Assistant coach Timothy Mitchell is a postdoc in ecology, evolution and organismal biology. Four starters are CALS students: Nathan Chambers, senior in agricultural and life sciences education; Ethan Parker, sophomore in agricultural engineering; Chris Walther, senior in industrial technology; and Matthew Kriha, junior in animal science.
