Innovation and Intellectual Property

Research to Real-World Impact

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has a proven track record of moving discoveries from the lab and field into real-world applications. In partnership with the ISU Research Foundation (ISURF) and Office of Innovation Commercialization (OIPTT), the college actively supports the protection and commercialization of intellectual property (IP) arising from its research. CALS researchers made 217 disclosures to ISURF, filed 151 patent applications, and 44 patents were issued over a five-year period (2021-2025). This commitment to innovation has made CALS a leader in translating agricultural and life science research into products, companies and practices that benefit society and the economy.

Many of the top income-producing technologies at Iowa State came from research in CALS and the Ag Experiment Station. These technologies – ranging from crop genetics to farm technologies – have generated significant licensing revenue and practical benefits. CALS researchers excel at making fundamental discoveries and bringing them to market. The college works closely with Iowa State’s tech transfer offices to patent innovations and find industry partners. The result is a high rate of technology licensing and startup formation.

Iowa State as a whole consistently ranks among top universities for licenses and patents.
