Happy Monday CALS – I hope this finds you all well and you had a great weekend. Cyclone football sure did! Last week, we had the college and alumni association awards activities… Each year it's amazing the people we get to recognize… We also earlier in the week had the opening event for the Food Insecurity Challenge. We now have 30 teams of at least three students each (including many CALS students) brainstorming and preparing to compete in the Student Innovation Center next week on innovative ideas to further enable and enhance how food is made more accessible to those in need… More

Student Club Fundraisers

Graduate Student Club Holding Meat Raffle as Fundraiser
Members of the Association of Graduate Animal Scientists are selling meat bundle raffle tickets for their annual fundraiser. Two winners will receive more than 50 pounds of pork and beef valued at $300. Tickets are $10 each or five for $40. The drawing will be on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Proceeds will support travel scholarships for AGAS members. More  

Snow Blower Service Days Scheduled for Nov. 11-12
The Agriculture Systems Technology Club will hold its annual snow blower service days Friday, Nov. 11 (1-6 p.m.), and Saturday, Nov. 12 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.), at Sukup Hall. The $25 cost includes an oil change, a new spark plug and a power wash. Pickup and delivery (Ames zip code only) is available for $25; send an email request to Payment is by cash or check. Proceeds support club trips and meeting expenses. More  
Meat Science Club Taking Orders for Holiday Hams
The Meat Science Club is taking orders for its annual holiday ham fundraiser. Club members trim, inject, cook, smoke and package the holiday hams and ham hocks, providing them with hands-on meat processing experience. Proceeds go toward club activities and student development. Pick-up dates are Thursdays, Nov. 10, Nov. 17 or Dec. 8, 4-6 p.m. at the Meat Lab sales counter in Kildee Hall. More   
Poinsettia Sale Preorders Close on Nov. 18
The Horticulture Club is holding its annual poinsettia sale. Plants may be preordered online by Nov. 18, or purchased at these campus locations on a first come, first served basis: Nov. 30 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Curtiss Hall; Dec. 1 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Beardshear Hall; Dec. 2 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Horticulture Hall; and Dec. 3 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Reiman Gardens. Pot sizes are 4.5,6 and 10 inches; prices vary from $10 to $40. The poinsettias are grown by club members in the Horticulture Hall greenhouses. Funds raised are used for club activities, traveling expenses and student enrichment.

Forestry Club’s Christmas Tree Sale Begins Nov. 26
The Forestry Club is holding its annual Christmas tree fundraiser at the Reiman Gardens parking lot. Trees will be for sale Nov. 26-27, Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 11-12. Hours are Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The club will have Korean fir, balsam fir, Canaan fir and white pine, as well as wreaths. Cash or checks only. Proceeds go toward club activities and student development.
Deadline Extended for Summer Sausage and Cheese Orders
The deadline to order from the Block and Bridle Club’s annual holiday summer sausage and cheese sale has been extended until product is sold out. Orders will be available for pick-up on Nov. 7-9 and will be shipped by Nov. 14. The summer sausage is from the Meats Laboratory and the cheese is from Fareway. The fundraiser helps support scholarships, events and activities for the club. More  


Soynomics Team Releases First Video in 15-Part Series
The Soynomics Team has released the first video in a 15-part series – Soynomics: Root Phenotyping. The focus is on scientists working with engineers. Formed in 2014, the Soynomics Team is internationally recognized for their work in machine learning applications to agriculture, and outcomes from their work have advanced both plant sciences and engineering domains through interdisciplinary and interdepartmental contributions to research, education and outreach. As additional videos are released, they will be uploaded to the Integrated Pest Management YouTube channel.

Meyer Named “Hunger Fighter” Scholar
Christopher Meyer, junior in agronomy and agricultural business, is the 2022 winner of the annual David Lambert “Hunger Fighter” scholarship. Meyer said his experiences in high school with the Iowa Youth Institute and the World Food Prize led him to his passion for agronomy and fighting world hunger. The award is administered by Iowa State’s Seed Science Center. More  

Horticulture Student Paving His Own Way
In addition to completing assignments and taking exams, Luke Dietrich’s college career has consisted of laying bricks and drawing landscaping plans. The senior in horticulture is the owner of Pilot Landscaping Solutions LLC, and he has scaled his business while simultaneously pursuing his degree. Dietrich also is involved in the student incubator program through Start Something College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. More

Building Water Resilience in the Corn Belt Topic of Webinar 
Building water resilience in the Corn Belt is the topic of the Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at noon. John McMaine, South Dakota State University, will present. More  

Around the College

Applications Being Accepted for CALS Associate Dean Opening
Applications are being accepted through Dec. 11 for an associate dean for facilities and operations in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The position provides oversight of the college’s on and off campus facilities, equipment, research and demonstration farms, and affiliated infrastructure operations. Acker to Reimagine Food, Ag Sectors in Greece as Fulbright Specialist    
David Acker, associate dean for global engagement and director of the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods, has been selected to receive a Fulbright Specialist Program award. Acker will travel to Greece for 15 days this month and for 20 days in the spring of 2023 to work with individuals at Perrotis College at the American Farm School of Thessaloniki. He will focus on reimagining Greek food and agriculture sectors in anticipation of major shifts in consumer preferences, advances in production technologies and climate change, as well as identifying critical educational programs to prepare the future workforce for those anticipated changes. More  

Former College Students to be Honored in Gold Star Hall Ceremony
Five former Iowa State students, four of whom were enrolled in CALS, will be recognized for their military service, and their ultimate sacrifice, at the annual Gold Star Hall ceremony today, Nov. 7, at 3:15 p.m. in the Memorial Union Durham Great Hall. More  

  • Donald Wilkins earned a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology from Iowa State College in 1946. He became an anesthesiologist before contracting and dying of polio while serving on a hospital ship during the Korean War. 
  • Howard Medin graduated from Iowa State in 1940 with a degree in dairy industry. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor and died in December 1942 when his plane crashed near Mills Field in California. 
  • James Davis was a forestry student at Iowa State and joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1941. A WWII Army veteran, he died after enduring a prisoner-of-war ship in the Pacific. 
  • Ramon Davis attended Iowa State as a forestry student for just two-and-a-half months before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, before he went missing following an emergency landing along a Korean river. 


Nov. 9: INRC Water Quality Research Seminar
The Iowa Nutrient Research Center’s next Water Quality Research Seminar is Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 3:10-4 p.m. Steven Hall, ecology, evolution and organismal biology, and Justin Meissen, from UNI’s Iowa Tallgrass Prairie Center, will present on hot spots, prairie potholes and prairie implementation. Attendees can now receive one Certified Crop Adviser - Continuing Education Unit in the Soil and Water Management category for each fall 2022 seminar. More  

Nov. 22: ISU Creamery Curbside Pickup
The ISU Creamery is offering curbside pickup of ice cream quarts, 8 ounce cups and aged cheddar cheese on Nov. 22 and Dec. 21, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Email your order by noon on Nov. 21 and Dec. 20, respectively, to Pickup will be on the east side of the Food Sciences Building in the semi-circle drive. Pay at pickup with credit/debit cards, cash and gift certificates or vouchers. More  


Economist Models Adaptations to Climate Change Influences 
Gary Lyn, economics, says trade, migration and job options will affect how states and countries adapt to climate change over the next 100 years. Lyn is part of a research team that developed an economic model to better understand these market adaptations. More

The Conversation to Host “Crafting a Strong Pitch”
The Conversation is holding a Zoom session on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at noon for scholars and communications partners at member schools interested in learning more about “Crafting a Strong Pitch.” Sessions are held quarterly. More  


Working with Wounded Veterans Following World War I
The Smith-Sears Veterans Rehabilitation Act, passed in June 1918, designated federal funds to provide training for injured veterans to return to civil employment. Iowa State College helped administer the program and provided veterans with training in different lines of agriculture, including dairy manufacturing, beekeeping, mechanic work, corn breeding, welding, orchard management and poultry husbandry. Iowa State saw more than 2,000 veterans go through the program before it ended in July 1925. More
