Hello CALS Colleagues – Welcome to another great week at Iowa State. The Cyclone gridders are 3-0 and the Cyclone CALS are doing just as well. Recently, we learned of a USDA Climate Smart project to Iowa State through Lisa Schulte Moore and team with a funding ceiling of $80 million! That’s certainly a win... That’s another win... Always a win for us… All in the “W” column… Being on the CALS winning team is simply the best… More

CALS Award Nomination Deadline Nov. 15
Nominations for annual awards presented to faculty and staff by CALS are due Nov. 15. The list of college awards and nominating guidelines are available online. Nominations will be reviewed by the college faculty and staff award committees in December and presented during the annual CALS Awards Program, scheduled for March 21, 2023, at 4:1o p.m.
Nominations for most awards presented by Iowa State need to be submitted to the college first. The college deadline for university award nominations is Nov. 15. The college award committees will review and forward the best two to three nominations for each award. The list of university awards and nominating guidelines are available online. University awards are presented at the Iowa State Fall Convocation, held annually in September.
The award page on the CALS website provides a complete list of awards available, frequently asked questions and a list of past recipients. Contact your departmental awards committee for additional information.

Iowa Nitrogen Initiative Recruits Participants for On-Farm Trials
Iowa State University is recruiting farmers and certified crop advisers to participate in the 2023 Iowa Nitrogen Initiative field trials, joining a growing group of Iowa farmers who participated in field trials in 2022. The Iowa Nitrogen Initiative is a private-public partnership with a vision to provide Iowans with nitrogen science for the benefit of productivity, profitability and environmental performance. More
INRC Announces Funding for New Projects
The Iowa Nutrient Research Center has provided more than $1.4 million in funding for 12 new water quality and nutrient management projects led by researchers at Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. More

Alpha Gamma Rho Receives Top Accolade at National Convention
For the ninth time in its history, the Iowa State University Alpha Gamma Rho – Eta Chapter earned top chapter in the country honors. The fraternity, which consists of students from a variety of CALS majors, received the Maynard H. Coe Award during the National Alpha Gamma Rho convention at the end of July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The award, presented every other year, recognizes a chapter that has consistently maintained a high level of chapter operations. The chapter also brought home a number of other awards recognizing their efforts in community service, academic excellence and alumni engagement. More
Agronomy Student from Brazil Interns with Archontoulis
José Gabriel Gonçalves Ribeiro, an undergraduate student at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, is completing a seven-month internship at Iowa State under the guidance of Sotirios Archontoulis, agronomy. He works with other students and postdocs in Archontoulis’ lab on a variety of projects related to crop physiology and agronomy of maize and soybean crops. More

Agriculture Sector Ranked Most Dangerous in America
National Farm Safety and Health Week is Sept. 18-24, with educational opportunities planned for people of all ages, including weekday webinars hosted by farm safety experts. Fall harvest time is one of the busiest and most dangerous seasons of the year for the agriculture industry. “All Iowans should join with our agricultural safety professionals in working together to reduce the risks associated with agricultural production,” said Steven Freeman, agricultural and biosystems engineering. CALS Global Programs to Host Asia Networking Event
CALS Global Programs is hosting an Asia networking event on Sept. 27, from 4:10-6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room. The event is geared toward connecting faculty, staff and graduate students that are interested in or currently are conducting research in Asian countries. CALS faculty and a visiting scholar currently conducting research in Asian countries will present. Attendees will then have time for networking. More

ISU Extension and Outreach is hosting its annual Local Food Festival on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on central campus. The festival highlights the importance of locally sourced, sustainable food and provides local producers an opportunity to connect with students and staff. More
Sept. 22: Feeding the World Seminar Series
The Feeding the World seminar series continues Thursday, Sept. 22, from 3:40-4:55 p.m. in 1204 Kildee Hall, Ensminger Room. Behlul Behluli, University of Prishtina, and Jenna Plotzke, senior in global resource systems, who interned in Kosovo, will present “The Kosovo War, Food Security, and Reactions to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.” More

Memorial Union Hosts Grand Opening
The 15-month, $10 million renovation of the top three floors at the Memorial Union is complete. The grand opening event on Friday, Sept. 23, will begin in the Campanile Room at 11 a.m. with a short program, a ribbon cutting by the Ames Chamber of Commerce, and a pop-up museum and slideshow to view the Memorial Union through its many renovation stages. After the grand opening, guests can tour the new office spaces on floors 4-6 and the Soults Family Visitor Center. Registration is requested.
Craft a Strong Pitch for The Conversation
The Conversation is hosting a Zoom session on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at noon for scholars and communications partners interested in learning more about pitching story ideas to their editors. Sessions are held quarterly. More
World Food Prize Foundation Names Norman Borlaug Field Award Recipient
Mahalingam Govindaraj, senior scientist for crop development at HarvestPlus and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, has been named the 2022 recipient of the Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, endowed by The Rockefeller Foundation. He is recognized for his outstanding leadership in mainstreaming biofortified crops, particularly pearl millet, in India and Africa. More

Herbarium Tour Featured in Sept. 21 Art Walk
The University Museum’s September art walk focuses on scientific collections inspiring art on campus. The Ada Hayden Herbarium, founded by Charles Bessey in 1870, contains more than 660,000 specimens. These were used as inspiration by the artist Louise “Ouizi” Jones who created the mural “Hidden Gems of the Sculpture Garden.” The art walk is Wednesday, Sept. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. and begins at the Anderson Sculpture Garden outside of Morrill Hall. Attendees will then get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Ada Hayden Herbarium. Tour space is limited and registration is recommended.
