CALS Award Nomination Deadline Nov. 19
Nominations for awards presented by CALS are due Nov. 19. The list of college awards and nominating guidelines are available online. They will be reviewed by the CALS Awards Committee during December and presented during the annual CALS Awards Ceremony, scheduled for March 24. Nominations for most awards presented by ISU need to be submitted to the college first. The college deadline for university award nominations is Nov. 19. The CALS Awards Committee will review and forward the best two to three nominations for each award. The list of university awards and nominating guidelines are available online. University awards are presented at the ISU Fall Convocation in September. The award page on the CALS website provides a complete list of awards available, frequently asked questions and a list of past recipients. Contact your departmental awards committee for additional information.
College Road Show to Broadcast from ISU on Thursday, Sept. 12
Farm Journal correspondents are set to visit campus Sept. 11-12, to interview faculty and staff as part of its series of College Road Show broadcasts. On Sept. 11, Dean Daniel Robison will talk with Farm Journal about the new educational and research facility for feed milling and grain science. Steve Whitham, plant pathology and microbiology, and Lie Tang, agricultural and biosystems engineering, will also be interviewed about ENVIRATRON, an accelerator for climate change research. AgriTalk Radio will broadcast Thursday morning, Sept. 12, from the Brenton Center, talking with Dermot Hayes, economics; Charlie Hurburgh, agricultural and biosystems engineering, and Jamie Benning, Extension to Agriculture; and Whitham. At 2:15 p.m., AgriTalk Radio correspondent Chip Flory will interview Chad Hart and Lee Schulz, economics, live in front of Curtiss Hall. AgriTalk is available online. At 3 p.m., U.S. Farm Report will interview Hart and Schulz as well. Check local listings for broadcast schedule or online.

Application to AFA Leaders Conference Due Sept. 16
Applications are due Sept. 16 to attend the Agriculture Future of America Leaders Conference in Kansas City on Nov. 7-10. CALS Career Services is holding an application work night on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. in 0019 Curtiss Hall. AFA has more than 100 industry partners and 800 students attend every year. CALS Invites New Graduate Students and Post-docs to Welcome Dinner on Sept. 18
A CALS welcome event for new graduate students and post-docs will be held Sept. 18 in Harl Commons at Curtiss Hall. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m., followed by a panel discussion with current students from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Current graduate students and post-docs are encouraged to attend or volunteer for the panel. Food Science Student Interns at Hershey
Allison Little, a junior in food science, is working in a 14-month co-op program at The Hershey Company. She is overseeing test trials, writing reports, presenting findings and testing new ingredients. Little recommends learning outside of the classroom. “Many employers don’t just look at a person’s grades when interviewing,” she said. “They also want to see that their potential future employee has experiences that show they can develop relationships and work well with other people.”
CALS Study Abroad Fair Scheduled for Oct. 3
The CALS Study Abroad Fair will be held Oct. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Iowa Farm Bureau Pavilion in Kildee Hall. Program directors will have information on spring and summer programs, exchange opportunities and semester long opportunities, as well as other resources like student travel consultants and financial aid. Dairy Science Club ice cream will be served.

Pest Resistance Program Focus of National Science Policy Experience Tour
The Harrison County Pest Resistance Management Project, one of four pilot programs of the Iowa Pest Resistance Management Program, was the focus of attention for national researchers in pest management, sociology, farming, policymaking and the agriculture industry, at the 2019 Science Policy Experience. More than 70 participants from across the U.S., traveled to Logan, Iowa, on Aug. 6, to meet the Harrison County Project team members, understand local pest resistance issues and learn about successes and challenges in launching the pilot program of the IPRMP.
Pastureland Grazing Publication Describes Iowa Grazing Practices
Iowa’s Pastureland and Grazing 2013-2018 is a new six-page publication summarizing evaluation results to determine the changes in Iowa’s pasture management and to look at the effectiveness of the Iowa Beef Center’s various pasture programs. The publications can be downloaded at no charge from the ISU Extension Store.

Flora Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Cornelia Flora, distinguished emeritus professor of sociology, received the 2019 Richard P. Haynes Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in Agriculture, Food and Human Values from the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society at its annual conference on June 26-29 in Anchorage, Alaska. The award honors Flora’s career for outstanding contributions towards realizing the goals of the AFHVS through research, teaching, extension, public service and public policy.
Rasmussen on Iowa Chestnut Trees
Mark Rasmussen, director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, talked with KGLO News about the Chinese chestnut tree, which only takes three to five years of growth to produce a yield and is an emerging tree crop in the Midwest. According to the Sept. 5 news story, it’s estimated that a mature chestnut orchard can gross between $5,000 and $10,000 a year per acre.
CALS Communications and CALS Development Move Back to Curtiss Hall
The staff of CALS Communications Service (Brian Meyer’s office) and CALS Development (Ray Klein’s office) are moving back to Curtiss Hall as renovation is completed on the third floor. Staff contact information remains the same. Campus mail can be addressed as: “CALS Communications, 304 Curtiss Hall” or “CALS Development, 310 Curtiss Hall.”

Sept. 9: Farewell Reception for Kevin Keener
A farewell reception honoring Kevin Keener, food science and human nutrition, will be held today, Sept. 9, from 4-5 p.m. in 2379 Food Sciences Building. Food and drinks will be provided. Keener joined ISU in 2015 as director of the Center for Crops Utilization Research and the BioCentury Research Farm. He returned to the FSHN faculty in 2018 to focus on research, teaching and industry training initiatives. Keener has accepted a position outside of the university.
Sept. 10: Neuroscience Research Lecture
Lisa Feldman Barrett, distinguished professor of psychology at Northeastern University in Boston, will present “Emotions: Separating Fact from Fiction” on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. CALS is a co-sponsor of the lecture, which is the Neuroscience Research Day 2019 keynote.
Sept. 12: Feeding the World Seminar Series
The Feeding the World seminar series continues Thursday, Sept. 12, 3:40 to 5 p.m. in 1204 Kildee Hall, Ensminger Room. Megan Rapp, senior advisory for the Development Credit Authority in the U.S. Agency for International Development, will present.
Sept. 25: ISU’s Local Food Festival
ISU’s Local Food Festival will be held Sept. 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in central campus. The event features educational displays, food samples, recipes using local foods developed by Iowa State dining chefs, and locally grown and produced products for sale by vendors and ISU clubs. Free bike tune-ups will also be offered. Sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach, ISU LiveGreen, and ISU Dining.
Sept. 26: Cultural Competency Series
The CALS Office for Diversity Programs will host a Cultural Competency Learning Series workshop on Managing Dis/Ableism on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 368A Heady Hall. The goal of the workshop is to help participants gain a basic understanding of ableism, disableism, access and accommodations.
Oct. 2: Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture
Jim Knuth, senior vice president for Farm Credit Services of America, will present the 2019 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture on Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Leonard and Evelyn Dolezal Auditorium, 127 Curtiss Hall.

ISU Completes Third Largest Fundraising Year
Forever True, For Iowa State, ISU’s multi-year fundraising campaign, has raised $1.2 billion, which is 80 percent of its goal of raising $1.5 billion by 2021. During the 2019 fiscal year, the ISU Foundation raised $182 million to support the students, faculty, facilities and programs of the university. It was the third-largest fundraising year in the foundation’s history. More than 6,700 students received donor-funded scholarships, and the number of endowed chairs, professorships and faculty fellowships grew to 209.
ISU Extension and Outreach Becomes a Digital Access Trailblazer
After deciding to make past and future digital publications accessible, an ad hoc team at ISU Extension and Outreach quickly learned how rare that is. Three years later, their intensive approach and self-built accessibility curriculum are drawing attention and praise nationally.
Whiterock Conservancy Celebrates Anniversary of Khrushchev Visit
Whiterock Conservancy invites the public to a free event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s historic visit to the Roswell and Elizabeth Garst farm near Coon Rapids, Iowa. This “K60” celebration on Sept. 28 begins at 10 a.m. with tours. A keynote will be presented at 1:30 p.m. by Timothy Naftali, CNN Presidential Historian and co-author of the award-winning book “Khrushchev’s Cold War.” Most activities will take place on the lawn of the recently restored Roswell and Elizabeth Garst Historic Farmhouse, named a 2019 “Best Rural Preservation Project” from Preservation Iowa. Animal Anecdotes at Blank Park Zoo
Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is offering an adult education series in September and October on animal anecdotes. It consists of a 45-minute interactive presentation from the zookeeper with time afterwards for questions. Weather permitting, participants may also visit the animal’s exhibit. The first session, Bamboozled by Red Pandas, is Sept. 25.
