Tylka Receives Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research

Greg Tylka, Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Iowa Soybean Research Center, Iowa State UniversityGreg Tylka, Morrill Professor in plant pathology and microbiology, interim associate department chair and director of the Iowa Soybean Research Center, is the recipient of the Dean Lee R. Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University. Tylka’s program focuses on the biology and management of plant-parasitic nematodes, with major focus on the soybean cyst nematode. Current research includes study of SCN-resistant soybean varieties, effects of nematode-protectant seed treatments, and interactions between SCN and insect herbivores. Through the Iowa Soybean Research Center, Tylka works to increase collaboration, coordination and integration among Iowa State University, the Iowa Soybean Association, industry and farmers to align soybean-related activities at Iowa State with the needs of Iowa soybean farmers and the industry that supports production of the crop.

In addition to his research, considerable effort in the Tylka lab is spent developing educational materials and implementing educational programs that explain the biology, proper identification and management of the soybean cyst nematode for farmers and agribusiness personnel. These educational materials and programs are developed and distributed in partnership with ISU Extension field staff, public agencies, private seed and chemical companies, and commodity organizations.
