Makayla Villela (biochemistry) is a natural in the lab. But her love of animals is leading her on a path to veterinary school. Through the logical nature of the scientific process and thinking about where the process could be improved, Makayla is able to apply her knowledge to help her favorite animals.
Students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) participate in the planning of the Stupka Symposium. Entirely planned and executed by undergraduate students in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology, the symposium encourages scientific investigation by students and allows them to present work and network with faculty, alumni, and guests of the event. Projects presented are often great additions to applications for medical or veterinary school and as a precursor to work in graduate school.
Some of Makayla's favorite conversations have been with fellow students and faculty outside of the lab at events like the symposium or at hands-on animal facilities. It is through these conversations from which some of the best learning experiences happen.
