I have had the most amazing opportunities at Iowa State. I currently serve as World President of the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS). It's both a challenging and an incredible opportunity.
There is often a huge misconception about agriculture, that it is only tractors and farming. When I mentioned that I worked for the USDA, my peers thought I would be working in a field in rural Arkansas. I told them USDA is very versatile and that agriculture can take you anywhere.
I would advise every freshman to sign up to be a member of a learning community. It's a great way to meet people because you have classes, study groups and networking with your peers.
The opportunities at universities like Iowa State are everywhere; so get involved! Whether it's in the laboratory, on the athletic field, or within your residence hall, being involved will help you transition from high school to university.
What I enjoyed the most at Iowa State so far is forestry camp, it's a three week long trip that helps you learn about the different options for your forestry degree.
