World Food Prize Laureate to Speak on Friday at McFarland Park

John Niederhauser, 1990 World Food Prize Laureate, will speak at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Story County Conservation Center in McFarland Park. Niederhauser was invited to speak by the Iowa State University plant pathology department. The lecture is titled, "International Agricultural Development: A Personal History." It is sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. In 1990 Niederhauser was named World Food Prize Laureate for his work with potatoes. The potato ranks fourth among the world's food staples. Niederhauser helped farmers in Mexico increase potato production sixfold from 1950 to 1980. He is known throughout the world as "Mr. Potato" for his contributions.
