Research and Demonstration Farm Field Days Begin June 19

AMES, Iowa — Field days at Iowa State University's Research and Demonstration Farms begin June 19 at the Northeast farm near Nashua. Among the highlights of the field day season is the 50th anniversary of the Allee Demonstration Farm near Newell on Sept. 16. There also will be special tours of biomass research plots and bioenergy processing equipment at the Agricultural Engineering/Agronomy Farm near Ames Aug. 25 and 29, the days before and after the Farm Progress Show. The public is welcome to attend these field days, which take place rain or shine. Farm visitors are asked to follow policies at the end of this release when attending a field day at a farm with livestock (marked with an asterisk). Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm June 25, 9 a.m., near Sutherland Topics: livestock and grain marketing, weed management, growing season update, fertility and liming issues The farm is located 11 miles north of Cherokee on U.S. Highway 59 and a quarter mile east on county road B62. Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm June 26, 10:30 a.m., controlled drainage field day; noon, free lunch; 1 p.m. field day program Topics: new corn herbicides, crop season outlook, tiling research and a speech on "food vs. feed vs. fuel" From Crawfordsville, the farm is located one and three-quarter miles south, two miles east on G62 and three-quarters of a mile north on the Washington/Louisa county-line road. Allee Demonstration Farm* Sept. 16, 9:30 a.m. Topics: 50th anniversary celebration including a keynote speech by Endowed Dean Wendy Wintersteen, antique tractors, displays and refreshments The 50th anniversary celebration of the Allee Demonstration Farm on Sept. 16 will conclude with tours of the mansion of George Allee, an early developer of corn hybrids. A gift from his estate established the farm in 1958. He also bequeathed hybrid genetic material to Iowa State's corn-breeding program. The field day will include an antique tractor display, 1950s-era corn plot and speakers. Go 1.5 miles west on the gravel road that intersects Highway 7 at the curve southeast of Newell.
