AMES, Iowa -- The Monsanto Student Services Wing has been dedicated in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University.
A dedication ceremony was held today (Aug. 29) in Curtiss Hall. Located on the ground floor, the Monsanto Student Services Wing is home to key offices serving students, including student services, career services, study-abroad, global agriculture, and marketing and recruitment. The Monsanto Student Services Wing also includes a welcome center for prospective students and families to learn more about the college, its 24 majors and plentiful career opportunities.
"Curtiss Hall is the center of our student experience and the front door of the college," said Wendy Wintersteen, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "Stepping through that door, students will be welcomed in the Monsanto Student Services Wing. It will have a tremendous impact in shaping the lives of students. You can imagine the impact this wonderful space is having on new students as they get acquainted with campus and find a home within our college."
The Monsanto Company provided a $1 million gift to renovate and consolidate the offices and programs serving students in agriculture and life sciences.
"We're pleased to be a longtime partner with Iowa State University and are happy we could help support their commitment to providing the best educational setting for students," said Ted Crosbie, integrated farming systems lead at Monsanto. "This is not only a place where students can study and work, but a place committed to developing tomorrow's agriculture and life sciences leaders who will help meet the needs of farmers and our growing population."
The dedication of the Monsanto Student Services Wing is a major step in the overall renovation of the 103-year-old Curtiss Hall. Monsanto's gift is part of $7 million raised privately for the $14 million renovation. Construction continues in the next renovation phase, the creation of a student commons on the east side of the building.
Named for Charles Curtiss, Iowa State's dean of agriculture from 1902 to 1932, Curtiss Hall is one of the most recognized and distinctive landmarks on Iowa State's central campus. Each semester, thousands of students stream into Curtiss Hall to attend classes, get advice from mentors, sign up for international trips and get prepared for job interviews. The building houses administrative staff for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station and Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources, plus several other departments, centers and programs.
