AMES, Iowa — An Iowa State University animal science professor has received a national award for her research and leadership in the poultry industry.
Susan Lamont was presented the Helene Cecil Leadership Award July 9 at the Poultry Science Association annual meeting in Madison, Wis. The annual award goes to a woman who has made significant scientific contributions in the field of poultry science while providing leadership for other women in the field.
Lamont's expertise is in the area of poultry immunology and molecular genetics. She has published more than 90 refereed journal papers and 13 book chapters, plus numerous meeting proceedings and abstracts. She has served as associate editor of Poultry Science, as well as several other professional journals.
Lamont earned her bachelor's degree from Trinity Christian College in 1975 and a doctorate from the University of Illinois Medical Center in 1980. She completed a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts in 1983 before coming to Iowa State.
She was the first woman appointed to the Iowa State animal science faculty and the first woman assistant director of research for the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. Lamont served as chair of the Iowa State animal science department from 2001 to 2003, and was its first woman administrator.
Lamont mentors several undergraduate students in research projects in her laboratory each year and has participated in many programs that introduce under-represented groups to scientific research at Iowa State.
