AMES, Iowa — Hongwei Xin, a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University, was recently honored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE).
Xin was presented the organization’s Cyrus Hall McCormick-Jerome Case Gold Medal, which is among its highest honors. The award recognized Xin for his exceptional engineering and administrator achievements in advancing animal agriculture worldwide, and was presented at a ceremony held during the 2018 ASABE Annual International Meeting earlier this month.
“I owe this achievement to the numerous graduate students, postdocs, assistant scientists, scholars and faculty colleagues, and the supportive administration I have had the pleasure to work with,” said Xin, who serves as a distinguished professor in agricultural and biosystems engineering and animal science at Iowa State, and holds the Iowa Egg Council Endowed Professorship.
Xin also serves as the assistant dean for research in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, directs the Egg Industry Center and is the interim director of the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, all at Iowa State.
His research and extension endeavors include ensuring welfare of poultry breeding stocks during long-distance shipment. He has worked to help the poultry industry achieve environmentally friendly manure management by filling information gaps on manure production, nutrient profiles, and air emissions. The heat and moisture production data of poultry, swine and their housing systems published by Xin and his team have been adopted worldwide in the design and operation of modern animal production facilities.
Several Iowa State alumni and faculty members have received the honor over the years, including Charles Sukup in 2016, Ronald Leonard in 2011 and Wesley Buchele in 1988.
