Iowa State University Animal Scientist Honored as Swine Industry Leader

AMES, Iowa — An Iowa State University animal scientist has been recognized as a leader in the national swine industry.

JBS United, an international livestock feed company, presented John Patience, a professor of animal science, with its 2017 John B. Swisher Leadership Award June 7 at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines. The company annually honors someone who exemplifies extraordinary leadership qualities and has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the swine industry.

“We are honored to award Dr. Patience with the 2017 John B. Swisher Leadership Award,” said Doug Webel, president and CEO of JBS United. “Dr. Patience is a noteworthy leader in the field. His work with the students at Iowa State University is leaving a lasting impact on the swine industry.”

Patience joined Iowa State’s Department of Animal Science in 2008. Prior to that, he was the president and chief executive officer of PSC Elstow Research Farm Inc. and of Prairie Swine Centre Inc.

He is recognized nationally for his leadership in animal agriculture. His awards include the New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award from the Federation of Animal Science Societies/American Feed Industry Association and the Animal Industry Service Award from the American Society of Animal Science.
