AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University animal science faculty and students won several awards and honors at the Joint Annual Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA), Poultry Science Association (PSA), Asociación Mexicana de Producción Animal (AMPA) and the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) held July 11-15 in Denver.
Don Beitz, Iowa State animal science distinguished professor, received the Morrison Award, an honor given for outstanding recent research that is important in livestock production.
Maynard Hogberg, Iowa State professor and chair of the animal science department, was named an ASAS Fellow in the administration category.
Leo Timms, Iowa State professor of animal science, received the DeLaval Dairy Extension Award from the ADSA.
Doug Kenealy, University Professor of animal science at Iowa State, received the Bouffault Internatnional Animal Agriculture Award at the joint meeting.
John Patience, Iowa State animal science professor, was named a Fellow at the Canadian ASAS meeting.
Erin Richter, Iowa State animal science graduate student from Nevada, received the Joseph P. Fontenot Student Travel Scholarship.
Cassie Jones, Iowa State animal science graduate student from Beulah, N.D., joined the ASAS board as a graduate director.
Kaleena Westaby, a May dairy science graduate from Stockton, Ill., received the Genevieve Christen Outstanding Student Award, which is given to the top student in dairy science in the United States.
Nathan Carroll, an Iowa State junior in dairy science from Ryan, was nominated to serve as the second vice president of the ADSA-Student Affiliate Division.
The Dairy Science Club also won first place for its chapter scrapbook, first place for its chapter display and third place for its website. Students also participated in a dairy quiz bowl, business meeting, career symposium, awards luncheon and various competitions, including an undergraduate paper competition.
More than 100 students and advisers attended the meeting, along with 5,000 professionals from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
