College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Alums Honored at 2010 Ceremony

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences presented awards on Oct. 29 at the annual Iowa State University Alumni Association Honors and Awards ceremony. Jim Borel, executive vice president of DuPont, received the Floyd Andre Award that recognizes alums who have made outstanding contributions to production agriculture, agricultural business or who have significantly influenced Iowa agriculture. Borel has responsibility for DuPont's production agriculture businesses, which includes DuPont Crop Protection and Pioneer Hi-Bred. Borel graduated from Iowa State in 1978 in agricultural business. Following graduation, he started his career at DuPont in Ohio as a sales representative. He has held a number of product and sales management positions in DuPont's agricultural businesses, including positions in England, Canada and Japan. Rose Boughton, received the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences George Washington Carver Distinguished Service Award. The award was established to honor Iowa State alumni and friends for outstanding achievements in the agricultural, food, environmental, social and life sciences. Boughton graduated from Iowa State in 1958 in dietetics and went on to work at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis. She retired from Fairview Health in 2006 as the administrative director of nutrition services. Before retiring she managed nutrition services management staff in the organization's six hospitals, including the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Fairview. Dana Robes received the Henry A. Wallace Award, which was established in 1978 to honor an Iowa State alumnus who has made an outstanding contribution to national or international agriculture in writing, teaching, research or leadership. Robes began his career in animal nutrition and went on to start Dana Robes Woodcraftsmen, a successful furniture business that he and his wife, Martha, owned for 22 years. The Robes family has partnered with Iowa State faculty for several years to find new ways to market the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which they believe should be recognized as the "best in the nation." Scholarship funds were set up by the family to help students build leadership skills, reward volunteerism and provide incentives to volunteer as student ambassadors of the college. Robes and his wife also established funds to honor retired leaders in dairy science. The Robeses set up the Norman Jacobson Professorship, which made it possible for Iowa State University to hire one of the best young dairy researchers in the country. Andrea Falk Sellers received the Superior Achievement Award for Early or Mid-career alumni from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The award honors distinguished alumni under 40 years old who have excelled in their professions and are providing outstanding service, leadership and involvement in their communities. Falk Sellers is a registered patent attorney and partner with Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP in Kansas City, Mo. Her expertise is in the area of intellectual property law, with an emphasis on chemical, biosciences and agricultural technologies. Falk Sellers received her law degree from the University of Iowa in 1997. Prior to law school, she worked as a laboratory assistant at Iowa State, where she studied sequence variations in the mitochondrial DNA of cattle. She recently returned to the Stinson law firm after three years as associate general counsel for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a private foundation focused on entrepreneurship.
