AMES, Iowa — All things buggy will be on display July 1 when the Iowa State University Insect Zoo hosts an open house.
“ ‘Come Get Your Bug On’ is the theme of the Insect Zoo's open house,” said Ginny Mitchell, the zoo’s educational program coordinator. “Arthropods of all kinds — insects, tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes and crabs — will be on display.”
The event is open to the public at no charge from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 1st and 4th floors of Science Hall II on the Iowa State campus, which is across from the Insectary on Pammel Drive (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.03026,-93.64641,19z).
“You can cheer on your favorite cockroach in the roach races, or sit back and check out the busy bees in our honeybee observation hive,” Mitchell said. “We will have an insect themed art project, games and prizes. You also can purchase a limited edition Insect Zoo t-shirt and a Chilean rosehair tarantula.”
Free parking is available at the Iowa State Center near Stephens Auditorium in lots A3, A4 and B4-B6. CyRide’s orange bus route leaves from the transit hub between parking lots A4 and B6 and goes along Osborn Drive near Science Hall II. CyRide’s red bus route stops in front of the building. Metered parking is available on the corner of Pammel Drive and Bissell Road, near the Armory.
