Aug. 21 Home Demonstration Garden Field Day Cancelled

AMES, Iowa — The Home Demonstration Garden Field Day at the Rhodes Research and Demonstration Farm has been cancelled. The field day was set for Aug. 21. It will not be rescheduled because cattle at the farm got into the garden and trampled the plants. Remaining field days for gardeners are scheduled for the Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Doon at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and the McNay Research and Demonstration Farm near Chariton at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5. The field days are free and open to the public. Miniature versions of tomatoes, eggplant, corn, beets, carrots, pumpkins, melons, peppers, cucumbers and several varieties of pole beans will be on display. Corn gluten meal is being used to prevent weed seeds from germinating. In the flower beds, there are zinnias of every size and color, as well as cannas, calla lilies, elephant ears, four o'clocks, cuphea, castor beans, angelicas and datura flowers.
