COLLEGE CELEBRATES VEISHEA FRIDAY
Friday, April 21, is VEISHEA’s College of Agriculture day. The College will sponsor a breakfast from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the Curtiss Hall Rotunda for faculty, staff and student leaders. A barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. in front of Curtiss. On the menu are hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, ice cream, lemonade and milk. The Rodeo Club will have a mechanical bull and roping lessons and Mark Pearson from WHO Radio will be broadcasting from campus. Ag Olympics will be among the activities.
HORTICULTURE CLUB PUTS PLANTS ON SALE
The Horticulture Club will be selling assorted perennials, hanging baskets, packs of annuals, and 4.5" pots Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22. Hanging Baskets will be $12; 4.5" pots, $2.50; annual packs, $1; and perennials as marked. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Horticulture Greenhouse.
PARADE AND FOOD GALORE
On Saturday, the parade starts at 10:40 a.m. and will include the Ag Council float featuring the Ag Man & Woman of the Year, Phil Anderson, senior in animal science from Osage, and Alicia Clancy, senior in journalism and public service and administration in agriculture from Halbur. College of Agriculture student clubs will be serving food at booths located around campus, including: Agricultural Business Club in front of Lagomarcino Hall; Agronomy Club in front of Science I; ASAE south of Beardshear Hall; Block & Bridle Club on the east side of Parks Library; Farm Op Club by Carver and Beardshear; and Fisheries and Wildlife Biology Club’s Bison Tent north of MacKay.
TREE-CLIMBING DEMONSTRATION
The Arboriculture Club will have a certified arborist and Iowa State alum Scott Gehl available to do a tree-climbing demonstration on central campus. The club received university permission to use a large tree on central campus for the activity. After a demonstration, visitors can try their climbing skills if they sign the necessary waivers. Gehl will assist them climbing to what he determines is a safe height.
WATCH FOR DISPLAYS AND DEMONSTRATIONS
College of Agriculture displays will be located on central campus between Beardshear and Curtiss halls. Watch for: an Agricultural Business display; Alpha Zeta display and t-shirt sale; Microbiology Club selling microbes; Pre-Vet Club’s Petting Zoo and selling dog biscuits; the Forestry Club selling seedlings and a saw demonstration; the Fisheries and Wildlife Biology Club’s Wildlife Care Clinic; and the Soil and Water Conservation Club’s groundwater flow model. In Cy's Big Top tent on central campus, the Collegiate 4-H Club will have bubble activities and the Microbiology Club will be making bacteria.

FIRST VEISHEA CHAIR WAS COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE STUDENT
Wallace McKee, a College of Agriculture student majoring in animal husbandry, was the general chairperson of the first VEISHEA in 1922. After earning his bachelor's degree in 1922, McKee was an agriculture extension agent in Marion County, public relations director at the Chicago Union Stockyards and a farm manager with Equitable Life Assurance Society. He also farmed for more than 57 years. McKee served as VEISHEA parade marshal in 1977 and 1982. He died in 1988 at the age of 91.
