Applications Being Accepted for PSI Faculty Scholars
The Plant Sciences Institute is accepting applications for PSI Faculty Scholars. The program is intended to identify, support and empower talented researchers at ISU who have the potential to significantly contribute to the complex and rapidly emerging discipline of predictive phenomics. Last Women’s Leadership Workshop for CALS Graduate Students Dec. 5
The last session in the Women’s Leadership Workshop series for graduate students and post-docs across CALS is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in 1306 Elings Hall. Habits of Influential Women will be discussed by a panel including Sue Blodgett, entomology and natural resource ecology and management; Maria Salas-Fernandez, agronomy; Angie Rieck-Hinz, extension to agriculture; and Shannon Latham, vice president of Latham Hi-Tech Seeds. Please register and indicate if you would be interested in childcare. The workshop series is organized by faculty and graduate students in the department of agronomy, with funding from the department, the CALS Advance program and the vice president of diversity and inclusion.
National Geographic: Entomology Student Writes While Insect-Hunting in Chile
Ruben Isai Madriz, Ph.D. candidate and research assistant in entomology, publishes a story on residual fragments of past lives. Madriz is a 2017-2018 Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellow. Madriz is in Chile to hike, bikepack and packraft to unexplored areas and secluded fjords in search of some of the rarest insects on the planet, telling the story of deglaciation in the Northern Patagonia Ice Field. The fellowship is a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the National Geographic Society. More

The ISU Horticulture Club has been bringing together students with an interest in plants since 1900. A recent article in the Iowa State Daily talks with Barb Clawson, club advisor, about club activities.
Deadline for Block and Bridle Club’s Summer Sausage and Cheese Sale Dec. 6
Wednesday, Dec. 6, is the deadline to order from the Block and Bridle Club’s annual holiday summer sausage and cheese sale. The summer sausage is made on campus in the Meats Laboratory and the cheese (cheddar, Colby jack and pepper jack) is from Bongards Creamery in Minnesota. Money raised will be used for club trips, and shows and scholarships hosted by the club. Contact isussandc@gmail.com with questions.
Final Weekend for Forestry Club’s Christmas Tree Sale
The final weekend of the Forestry Club’s annual Christmas tree fundraiser is at the Reiman Gardens Parking Lot. Trees will be for sale Friday, Dec. 8, 3 to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 9, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 10, 12 to 5 p.m. The club will have Fraser fir, balsam fir, and white and Scotch pine, as well as balsam fir wreaths. Proceeds go towards club activities and student development.

ISU to Offer Fermentation Lab and Processing Tour, Jan. 9
A free tour of the Center for Crops Utilization Research and BioCentury Research Farm fermentation and biochemical processing spaces will be held Jan. 9, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Companies developing a new product or improving a process can tour the facilities and meet with ISU experts. Webinar to Explore Lessons Learned from Using Cover Crops
Tom Kaspar will discuss lessons learned from using cover crops to reduce losses of nitrate during the Iowa Learning Farms webinar on Dec. 13 at noon. Kaspar is a plant physiologist at the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment and a faculty collaborator in agronomy. More
Around the College
Agronomy’s Soil and Plant Analysis Lab to Close
Effective immediately, the Department of Agronomy’s Soil and Plant Analysis Lab will close. For more than 35 years, the lab has conducted sample testing for faculty and staff across campus and for external clients. In recent years, the number of samples submitted has been decreasing while lab equipment has become outdated, making its continued operation cost prohibitive. The lab will finish analyzing samples for this current harvest season, and then make plans to refocus its efforts internally to support soil science research of agronomy faculty. Kendall Lamkey, professor and chair of agronomy, has provided a link to a list of alternative testing laboratories from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. More
New Gallery in Economics Department Highlights Iowa Artists
Peter Orazem, economics, and his wife, Patti Cotter, have loaned 14 pieces of art by Iowa artists to be displayed in 368A Heady Hall. Orazem’s love of art began when he was a boy. When traveling as a consultant for the World Bank, he began buying a piece of art from each country as a souvenir. He was later inspired to see how many works of Iowa artists he could find. The collection is open to the public whenever the room is not in use for seminars and other events. More

This semester’s Science With Practice poster presentation open house will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Kildee Hall Atrium. Science With Practice is a CALS experiential learning and work program for undergraduate students in agriculture.
Dec. 8: ISU Signature Ice Cream Contest Winner Announcement
The winner of the ISU Signature Ice Cream Contest will be announced during a brief ceremony Friday, Dec. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to noon, in the Friley Windows dining center. The top three finalists are Cardinal Tracks, Cyscream, and Ice Cream of the “Day.”

Research Development Announcements and Funding Opportunities
CGRER Grant Proposals Due Jan. 16
The Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research at the University of Iowa is accepting applications for a new large grant development program and to their traditional small grants program for pilot studies on global change, climate effects and regional environmental research related to global environmental problems. The objective of the new grant development program is to develop proposals and teams that are able to compete successfully for external funding. At least 50 percent of the awarded funds for the large grant program must be spent in support of University of Iowa faculty participation. Expressions of interest for the large grant program are requested prior to the proposal deadline. Applications for both programs are due by Jan. 16. More
Egg Industry Center Pre-proposals Due Dec. 22
The Egg Industry Center is accepting pre-proposals for research that can add to the current body of knowledge for the egg industry. Research areas of interest include comparative investigation of specific aspects of production systems and styles of cage-free housing, disease and parasite prevention in cage-free housing, and robotic application for modern egg production, among others. PIRI Lunch and Learn Sessions Scheduled for Dec. 6 and Dec. 13
The Office of the VPR invites faculty to bring their lunch and attend one of two discussions about the Presidential Interdisciplinary Research Initiative. VPR leaders will provide information on how to apply to this internal funding program for interdisciplinary research teams. PIRI pre-proposals are due Jan. 31. The Lunch and Learn will be offered twice. The first session will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 12 to 1 p.m. in 1951 Food Sciences Building. The second session will be held on Dec. 13 from 12 to 1 p.m. in 1102 Molecular Biology Building.
ISU I-Corps Sites – CALS Informational Lunch and Learn, Jan. 17
The ISU Office of the VPR, Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations, and CALS will co-host a Lunch and Learn informational session about the new ISU I-Corps Site Program. I-Corps Sites act as a training ground for faculty and postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate students to learn how to increase the impact of their research by exploring the commercial potential of their research and technology. Fifteen teams will be selected to participate in the spring 2018 program. Guru Rao, Associate VP for Research, and Kris Johansen, EDIR Manager of Industry Relations, will provide an overview of the program. A panel of participants from the fall 2017 cohort will discuss their experience in the program and answer questions. The Lunch and Learn will be held Jan. 17 from 12 to 1 p.m. in 142 Curtiss Hall. All interested faculty, postdoctoral students and graduate students are invited. Lunch will be provided. RSVP to Carla Persaud (cpersaud@iastate.edu) by Jan. 10 if you plan to attend.

Extension Field Agronomist Talks about Changes in Agriculture
“On one wall of my office I have a picture of an Amish couple hand-harvesting corn. Next to that picture is hanging the thumb hook my father used to harvest corn when he first started farming,” writes Joe DeJong, field agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “On my computer I have an aerial photo of the Northwest Research Farm taken with an unmanned aerial vehicle,” DeJong continues. “Why? I want to remind myself of what my role in agriculture is – to help get new research-based technologies that improve our industry implemented on Northwest Iowa farms. Knowing where we came from and knowing we are working to create new information for the future motivates me to continue my work.”
