50 Years at ISU: Beitz and Bern Share their Experiences
Don Beitz, distinguished professor of animal science, and Carl Bern, university professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, sit down with CALS communication specialists Barb McBreen and Dana Wilson to share some of their experiences and stories after 50 years of teaching at ISU. Beitz begins his 51st year as a professor and researcher at Iowa State this fall. He says the best thing about teaching is inspiring others. During Bern’s 50-year career, he’s seen electricity transform life on the farm and the growth of opportunities in agricultural engineering. Monarch Butterfly Research Focus of July 20 Field Day
Research on increasing habitat for monarch butterflies will be among the topics presented at a field day on July 20 at ISU’s Western Research and Demonstration Farm near Castana. More

Dual Degree Program Established with Henan Agricultural University
A memorandum of agreement between ISU and Henan Agricultural University, located in the Henan Province in China, will establish a dual undergraduate degree program in food science where students can study and obtain a degree from both universities. Faculty members will also have the opportunity to conduct collaborative research.
Animal Science Students Recognized at ADSA Meeting
Sara Kvidera, animal science graduate student under the direction of Lance Baumgard, was awarded the National Milk Producers Federation Dairy Scholarship Fund at the American Dairy Science Association annual meeting in Pittsburgh on June 26. Cassie Krebill, senior in dairy science, was elected to the ADSA-Student Affiliate Division national student board and is serving as the Officer at Large.

Field Day in Northwest Iowa Set for July 12
A field day will be held at ISU’s Northwest Iowa Research and Demonstration Farm near Sutherland on Wednesday, July 12, at 9 a.m. Topics include crop market outlook, soybean aphids and insecticide resistance, aerial imaging, and agronomic and weed management issues. More

Timms Receives ADSA Award of Honor
Leo Timms, animal science, received the American Dairy Science Association Award of Honor at the ADSA annual meeting in Pittsburgh on June 26. The award was created to recognize outstanding and consistent contributions to the welfare of the association. Timms has been industrious and innovative in all facets of ADSA, from his first meeting as a graduate student in 1981 to 2017.

BARD Research Program and Feasibility Proposals Due Sept. 13
The U.S.-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund Research Grant Program funds up to $310,000 total for three-year projects conducted cooperatively by U.S. and Israeli scientists. One-year feasibility studies with maximum awards of $100,000 will also be considered. Proposals are expected to deal with an agricultural issue or problem and yield tangible results that could be implemented within a reasonable time after project completion. Projects cover all phases of agricultural research and development, and the outcomes of BARD funded research must be accessible to the public. Applicants should note BARD’s new on-line submission process and format requirements. Applications are due Sept. 13. More
BARD Proposals for Research and Workshop Activities Due Jan. 15
The U.S.-Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund is accepting applications for four cooperative agricultural research and workshop activities. BARD’s Senior Research Fellowship program funds travel for established scientists from the U.S. to contribute to agricultural research activities in Israel. The Vaadia-BARD Postdoctoral Fellowship program promotes cooperative agricultural research between postdoctoral fellows from one country (the U.S. or Israel) and established scientists from the other. The BARD Graduate Student Fellowship program enables Ph.D. students of Israel and the U.S. to travel to the other country to acquire new skills and techniques in their field of study. The objective of BARD Workshops is to identify research needs in areas of new development, define directions and opportunities regarding contemporary agricultural needs, and provide information needed to address policy issues. USDA SBIR Proposal Prep and Workshop Event, Aug. 3
Applications for the USDA NIFA FY 2018 Small Business Innovation Research competition are due Oct. 5. In anticipation of this deadline, the Iowa Innovation Corporation will host an SBIR Proposal Prep and Workshop Event. Charles Cleland, head of the USDA SBIR Program, will introduce the program and meet with individual participants to discuss their projects. Mark Henry of Grow Emerging Companies will present a workshop covering all aspects of writing SBIR grants for the USDA competition. The event and workshop will be held on Aug. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Economic Development Core Facility in Ames. More
Iowa SBIR Showcase Hosted by Iowa Innovation Corporation, Sept. 6
The Iowa SBIR Showcase is part of a national outreach effort to convey the technology funding opportunity provided through the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. Federal and state program managers representing $2.5 billion in early stage funding will meet virtually with technology entrepreneurs and innovation supporters. The program will include an introduction to SBIR, a panel of past winners and Phase I and Phase II Pitch Competitions for Iowa winners, with prizes of $5,000 and $10,000, respectively. Virtual one-on-one discussions will be scheduled with program managers from USDA, NIH, NSF, DOE and other agencies. The Showcase will be held on Sept. 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Coralville. The registration fee is $40. More
NSF CISE to Pursue Actions in Support of Broadening Participation in Computing
The National Science Foundation Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering has issued a Dear Colleague Letter announcing a pilot effort to enhance the awareness of and barriers to broadening participation in computing. This effort will provide information and resources to principal investigators so that they can develop interest, skills and activities in support of broadening participation in computing at all levels (K-12, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate). CISE expects to support enhanced exposure to issues and remedies of broadening participation through outreach activities, resource creation, research and active community engagement in proposals, awards and review panels. The key to communication is clarity. Yet many authors struggle with clearly conveying methodologies, findings and relevant implications when crafting research briefs or other types of scholarly manuscripts. Debbie Allen, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Extension, presented an eXtension Professional Development webinar on strategies for avoiding common clarity-related issues in scholarly writing.
