International Ag Leaders Visit CALS
A group of international agriculture leaders, farmers and researchers toured CALS and its facilities on June 19 as part of the Nuffield International Farming Scholars program and CALS Global Programs. “Their visit here is so significant because it shows how respected the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is around the world,” said Denise Bjelland, director of Global Programs. “They chose to come here because we have a great combination of research, extension, outreach and education.” More

Monarch Conservation Efforts in Iowa Laying Foundation for Midwest
A new U.S. Geological Survey study highlights multiple options for restoring monarch breeding habitat in the Midwest to support recovery of the monarch butterfly. The study outlines a challenging goal, but it’s one that the Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium and the monarch research team at ISU are addressing. More
Genetics, Data Affect Direction of Ag Research
Joe Colletti, senior associate dean for CALS and associate director of the Experiment Station, works with many of the research programs in the college. In an article for Iowa Farmer Today, Colletti said that more specific genetic work and better data gathering and analysis are revolutionizing research efforts. More
Dan Jaynes Answers Questions on Saturated Buffers Study
Saturated buffers are a new edge-of-field practice included in the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. They were developed in Iowa to remove nitrate from water draining out of field tiles before it enters streams and rivers. Dan Jaynes, scientist with the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment located on the ISU campus, answers questions about his study on the establishment and monitoring of saturated buffers. More
Cathy Good Retires, New Contact for AES Projects
After almost 34 years of service to CALS, Cathy Good, administrator for research programs, has retired from ISU effective June 30. FSHN Degree to Advance Skills of Nurses
The Iowa Board of Regents has approved plans for a new bachelor of science in nursing degree in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. The RN-BSN is a continuation program designed for registered nurses – those working in the field as well as recent graduates of approved nursing programs – who want to earn their bachelor’s degree. The program will begin in fall 2018. More
Culinary Food Science Student Interns at Walt Disney World
Taylor Dulaney, a senior in culinary food science, spent the spring 2017 semester taking part in the Disney Culinary Program at Walt Disney World in Florida. “I feel more confident in the kitchen,” Dulaney said following her completion of the internship. “You can learn about it in class, but when you actually do it, it makes so much more sense.” More

Traditional Forms of Communication Preferred by Iowa Farmers
The Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll asked farmers how they prefer to learn about different types of agricultural information. Responses showed that live, in-person ways of getting information were most popular for all topic areas. “The tried-and-true ways of communicating with farmers through meetings, field days and consultation are still the most preferred pathways, by far,” said J. Gordon Arbuckle, sociology. More
Demonstration Garden Field Days Reinforce Produce Donations
ISU Extension and Outreach will host six field days this summer at demonstration gardens across the state, with a focus on donation gardens. Last year, demonstration garden donations topped 10,000 pounds of fresh produce. “Most gardeners have excess produce and this helps provide them with ideas of what to do with that excess,” said Cindy Haynes, horticulture. The field days will take place at ISU Research and Demonstration Farms and the Horticulture Station. More
Four Prairie Strips Workshops to be Held this Summer
Four workshops will be held this summer and fall to help technical service providers, certified crop advisors and other advisors who work directly with farmers and landowners achieve their certification in prairie strip design, establishment and monitoring. The workshops will be run by ISU faculty and extension staff. More

In an article for Iowa Farmer Today, John Lawrence, interim vice president for Extension and Outreach, said the farm audience for extension has changed since it started 100 years ago, but the mission of education has not. More

American History TV to Feature MacDonald on Evolution of Nutrition
Nutritional deficiency diseases such as goiter and rickets were common conditions in America 100 years ago, but now you rarely hear of such cases. In a class lecture that will air on C-SPAN’s American History TV, Ruth MacDonald, food science and human nutrition, explains how advances in understanding the composition of food and the role of nutrients in health and disease have essentially eliminated these conditions. More
Woteki Joins FSHN Department as Faculty Member
Catherine Woteki, former undersecretary of USDA’s Research, Education and Economics mission area and a past CALS dean, has re-joined the food science and human nutrition department as a faculty member. She will provide lectures related to her knowledge of food and nutrition policy, communications and research. She is planning a campus visit in the near future. Faculty and staff are asked to consider ways they can use Woteki’s expertise in classes and/or research. Ideas for collaboration should be directed to Ruth MacDonald (ruthmacd@iastate.edu) or Ruth Litchfield (litch@iastate.edu).

Name Change: The Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success
Effective July 1, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Student Services is now The Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success. The new office title is aligned with national trends towards enhanced inclusion of the vast identities students hold with respect to sexuality and gender. Additionally, the new title improves clarity about the current and future mission, programs, services and resources offered in the office.
