Father’s Death Changes Graduation Plans for Laura Meany
Laura Meany grew up working on a farm that has been in her family since the Civil War. This fall, after her father Mark unexpectedly died, she decided to graduate early to partner with her mother, Lyn, and eventually take over the family farm near Rose Creek, Minnesota. Meany is graduating with a double major in international agriculture and public service and administration in agriculture. She’s currently finishing up an internship with the Iowa Farm Bureau and is one of the organizers for an upcoming Young Farmer Conference to be held Jan. 27-28 in Des Moines. Watch her video story

Five CALS Graduating Seniors Receive Awards
The CALS graduating class will hold its convocation ceremony on Dec. 17 at 9:30 a.m. in CY Stephens Auditorium in Ames. This year’s graduates will include five outstanding senior award winners: Rebecca Clay, agronomy and global resource systems; Shelby Fields, animal science; Leah Gilman, food science; Alexander Paul, animal science; and Nettie Payne, agricultural and life sciences education. Rebecca Clay to Serve as Student Marshal at Saturday’s Commencement
Rebecca Clay grew up in rural Iowa surrounded by endless rows of crops, where she struggled to comprehend how others could be hungry. Her interest and concern about the “bottom billion,” their agricultural practices and natural resources have led her to graduate with two degrees in agronomy and global resource systems. Clay will represent CALS at Saturday’s commencement ceremony as the student marshal. More
