Scholarships Awarded by CALS Exceed $3 Million
Scholarship funds awarded annually by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have topped $3 million. The college awarded 2,300 scholarships to students for this academic year. The college’s diverse scholarship portfolio include support for freshmen, transfer students, upperclassmen, graduate students and online learners, and awards that enhance many areas of a student’s education both in and out of the classroom, including hands-on learning, study abroad opportunities and leadership growth. FSHN to Hold Internship Reception
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is holding an internship reception on Thursday, Sept. 22, in Harl Commons, Curtiss Hall. The purpose is to let students who have had internships or work experiences share what they have learned with other interested students.
Agriculture Weekend Experience Scheduled for Oct. 7-9
CALS and the ISU Agricultural Endowment are hosting an Agriculture Weekend Experience on Oct. 7-9 in Albion and State Center. The AWE program is for students studying agriculture who do not have a background in farming. Participants have the opportunity to meet with members of the agricultural community and take part in hands-on learning while staying at a family farm. Applications are due Sept. 22. Submit Poster Ideas for 15th Borlaug Poster Competition by Sept. 26
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and the Nutritional Sciences Council will present the 15th annual Norman Borlaug Lectureship Poster Competition for graduate and undergraduate students on Oct. 10. Students are asked to enter poster abstracts in the general area of world food issues by Sept. 26. More
ISU Meat Judging Team Earns Honors at Hormel Contest
The ISU Meat Judging Team began the fall judging season at the Hormel National Barrow Show Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest held Sept. 10 at the Hormel Research and Development Facility in Austin, Minn. The graduate team placed third overall with a second place finish in fresh meat judging and a third place finish in questions. Brian Patterson, animal science, was third in fresh meat judging and fourth in questions. Taylor Wolfer, animal science, finished fourth in fresh meat judging. McKenna Powell, animal science, was the high individual in the overall contest. The undergraduate team finished fourth in the overall contest and won the processed meat division. Michaella Fevold, senior in animal science, was second high individual in the processed meat division. In the alternate division, Paige Whitney, junior in animal science, was the high individual and Rachel Wynn, sophomore in animal science, was fourth. More
Extension and Outreach
Meetings in West Central Iowa to Address Palmer Amaranth Infestation
Palmer amaranth has now been confirmed in more than 28 counties in Iowa, in both conventional farm operations and in native seed mixes for conservation purposes. ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist Mike Witt is hosting Palmer amaranth meetings in the west central region of Iowa (Sept. 20 and 22), focusing on identification, biology and management.
Partnership Focuses on Education and Gardening for Food Pantries
Garden plots at seven ISU research and demonstration farms are being used by extension and Master Gardener volunteers to grow more than 10,000 pounds of food for Iowans in need. More

ABE Undergraduate Program Ranked Country’s Best
According to the newly released U.S. News and World Report’s 2017 Best Colleges rankings in the biological/agricultural engineering category, ISU’s agricultural and biosystems program is the number one ranked undergraduate program among all national universities, and first among public universities, tied with Purdue University. The ABE graduate program is ranked at number two in the nation. More
Moschini, Perry Co-Author Article on GE Crops and Pesticide Use
GianCarlo Moschini, professor of economics and the Pioneer Chair in Science and Technology Policy, and Edward Perry, a former graduate research assistant at the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, have co-authored an article detailing the changes in herbicide and insecticide use among farmers growing genetically engineered crops. The article was released in the Aug. 31 issue of Science Advances, a journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. More

Sept. 22: Errington Memorial Lecture
Polar Bears, Sea Ice and Conservation is the topic of this year’s Paul L. Errington Memorial Lecture, to be held Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Andrew Derocher, professor of biological studies at the University of Alberta, has spent 30 years studying the ecology, conservation and management of large Arctic mammals with a focus on polar bears. Derocher will speak on “Polar Bears: An Arctic Icon in a Changing Climate.”
Oct. 5: Deal Leadership Lecture
Jim Collins, executive vice president of DuPont, will present the 2016 William K. Deal Endowed Leadership Lecture on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Richard and Joan Stark Lecture Hall, 1148 Gerdin Business Building. Collins will speak on “Growth Comes When You Least Expect It.” The event is free and open to the public. More
Oct. 8: Bacon Expo
The fourth annual Bacon Expo will be held Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. Organized by CALS students, Bacon Expo is a family friendly event where participants can sample creative bacon treats and enjoy live entertainment and education displays about the pork industry. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. This year’s co-chairs are Tayler Etzel, senior in agricultural business, and John Armstrong, junior in agricultural studies. More

Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Round 18, Proposals Due Nov. 9
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has issued a call for proposals for Round 18 of Grand Challenges Explorations. Topics of interest include designing new solutions to data integration for malaria elimination, among others. Phase I awards are $100,000, and follow-on Phase II awards are up to $1 million. Applications are due by Nov. 9. More
Iowa Energy Center Competitive Grants Program
The Iowa Energy Center is accepting applications for four types of competitive grants. Proposals are being accepted for planning grants ($5,000 to $8,000), opportunity grants ($10,000 to $200,000), special-project grants (up to $15,000), and matching grants (up to $200,000). Cost share is required for special project grants and matching grants. Proposals will be accepted continuously through June 30. More
CALS Travel Support: ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit, Requests Due Sept. 30
CALS will provide up to $1,000 per person for up to four CALS faculty members to attend the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit being held Feb.27 to March 1 in Washington, D.C. Travel support will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis, with preference given to individuals who have not recently received CALS travel assistance to attend a conference or workshop. ISU StartUp Factory Accepting Applications for 2017 Cohort
The ISU StartUp Factory is a 52-week intensive program, housed at the ISU Research Park, which provides an avenue for faculty, staff and students to create businesses. The 2017 StartUp Factory cohort is slated to begin on Jan. 3. Individuals interested in learning more about this program are invited to attend an Opportunity and Learning Session on Oct. 3 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 1200A in the Economic Development Core Facility at 1805 Collaboration Place, ISU Research Park. Applications for the 2017 cohort are due by Oct. 21. More

Using the Pronouns That and Which
Use the pronouns that and which in referring to inanimate objects and to animals without a name. Use that for essential clauses, important to the meaning of a sentence, and without commas (I remember the day that we met). Use which for nonessential clauses, where the pronoun is less necessary, and use commas (The team, which finished last a year ago, is in first place). If you can drop the clause and not lose the meaning of the sentence, use which. (Associated Press Stylebook, 2015 edition, pg. 260)

Liz Garst to Speak on Corn and Krushchev
Liz Garst, granddaughter of Iowa farmers and citizen diplomats Roswell and Elizabeth Garst, will share how Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and his family visited the Garst family farm in 1959 during a talk on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Garst also will discuss the history of agricultural development in Iowa, including the mid-century explosion of farm productivity, based on the hybrid seeds, machinery, fertilizers and livestock technologies promoted by her grandfather. The lecture, co-sponsored by CALS, is free and open to the public.
Leopold’s Daughter Pens Stories from the Leopold Shack
In 1934, conservationist Also Leopold and his wife bought a barn and surrounding lands in south-central Wisconsin. They worked with their five children to put into practice Aldo’s “land ethic,” which involved ecological restoration and sustainability. Estella Leopold, the youngest of the Leopold children, recently published “Stories from the Leopold Shack: Sand County Revisited.” More

Ode to the Harvest – a Ritual Revisited
Dan Gogerty, managing communications editor for the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, posted an Ode to the Harvest on Sept. 13. While visiting his parents’ farm, Gogerty thinks back to 1967 and the harvests of his youth, and how the ritual is revisited to this day. “The harvest is a ritual dance of man, machine and the good earth,” he writes.
