Research Findings Explored during Feb. 11 Webinar
Researchers with the Climate and Corn-based Cropping Systems Coordinated Agricultural Project have documented 130 findings in 154 peer-reviewed publications. Some of these findings will be explored during a webinar on Feb. 11, 1 to 3 p.m. For audio, phone (888) 450-5996; passcode 424492#. CEUs for Certified Crop Advisers are available. The five-year research project, led by Lois Wright Morton, sociology, is nearing completion. New ISU Research Studies Iowa Farmland that Loses Money
A new ISU study shows portions of Iowa farmland consistently produce yields that fall short of the cost of the inputs required to grow crops. Elke Brandes, a postdoctoral research associate in agronomy and lead author of the new study, said the new research may help farmers make more informed decisions about land use and perhaps get them to consider some alternatives. CALS Spring Career Day Attracts New Recruiters
The CALS spring career day is scheduled for Feb. 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. “What is most exciting is that 20 percent of the organizations scheduled to participate were not at the fall career day or have never recruited here before,” said Mike Gaul, director of career services for the college. Open Forum Scheduled for Assistant Dean for Student Services Candidates
CALS faculty and staff are invited to participate in two open forums for candidates for the assistant dean for student services position. Mike Retallick, agricultural education and studies, will present Feb. 1, 1:10 to 2 p.m. in 142 Curtiss. Howard Tyler, animal science, will present Feb. 2, 12:10 to 1 p.m. in 142 Curtiss. The candidates will make comments on their vision for student services for student success followed by a question and answer session.

A Call for Optimism at 60th Annual Shade Tree Short Course
The 60th Annual ISU Shade Tree Short Course, Glass Is Half Full: A Call for Optimism, will be Feb. 23-25 at the Scheman Building. The annual event is sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach, the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association and the Iowa Arborist Association.

Guru Rao, Roy J. Carver professor in biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology and chair of the department since 2009, has been named associate vice president in the office of the vice president for research, effective Feb. 15. More

Jan. 26: Iowa Public Radio Interview with Map of My Kingdom Author
An archived interview with Mary Swander will be broadcast on the Iowa Public Radio Talk of Iowa show at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The interview is being aired to promote the free performance of Map of My Kingdom on Friday, Jan.29, at 7 p.m. at the Gateway Center in Ames. The performance is being presented as part of the Beginning Farmer Center seminar, “Returning to the Farm.”
Feb. 8: Rossmann Manatt Seminar
Bryony Bonning, professor of entomology and director of the Center for Arthropod Management Technologies, will present the Rossmann Manatt Seminar on Feb. 8, 4:10 p.m. in E164 Lagomarcino Hall. She will present “From Plant Virus-Aphid Vector Molecular Interactions to Transgenic Resistance to Aphids.” Bonning received the 2015 Rossmann Manatt Award, which recognizes a tenured faculty member who has demonstrated an exceptional level of creativity and productivity in scholarship, teaching and research. March 3: Baker Plant Breeding Symposium
Registration is open for the R.F. Baker Plant Breeding Symposium to be held March 3 at the ISU Alumni Center. This year’s theme is “Thinking Outside the Box: A Look at Sustainability, Efficiency, Nutrition and Tolerance.” Abstract submissions are being accepted for student oral presentations and student poster presentations.

Limited Submission: Pre-proposals for Education and Literacy Initiative
The USDA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative is accepting proposals for the Food, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences Education and Literacy Initiative. The four funding areas for the ELI initiative are pre-doctoral fellowships, postdoctoral fellowships, Professional Development Opportunities for Secondary School Teachers and Research and Extension Experiential Learning for Undergraduate Fellowships. Submissions for the PD-STEP and REEU programs are limited to three per institution; preproposals for the ISU internal competition should be submitted to the Office of the VPR (fundingopps@iastate.edu) by Jan. 31. U.S. Embassy Seoul Small Grants Program
The U.S. Embassy Seoul, Public Affairs Section awards a limited number of grants to academic institutions to support exchanges between the United States and the Republic of Korea with the aim of improving mutual respect and understanding. Projects may include, but are not limited to, lectures, seminars, speaker programs, exchanges and projects. Topic areas include trade, entrepreneurship, clean energy, climate change and health, among others. While PAS will consider proposals up to $100,000, projects that are smaller in scope are more likely to be considered. Proposals can be submitted for review by March 31, June 30 and Oct. 20.

DOE’s Joint Genome Institute has opened several opportunities in their Community Science Program. DNA Synthesis proposals are due Feb. 12. Small-scale microbial/metagenome proposals are due Feb. 25. The JGI and Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory joint proposals are due Apr. 4. More

Gary Bowling Paintings on Display at Brunnier Art Museum
Gary Bowling is a landscape artist whose portrayals of fields, farms and streams throughout the Midwest have won great acclaim. Bowling has several pieces at ISU through the Art on Campus Program. For the first time, many of those works of art are brought together in an exhibition, loaned from campus colleges and departments, including CALS. “Dawn to Dusk: Paintings of Gary Bowling” is on display through July 31 at the Brunnier Art Museum. Book Explores Thomas Jefferson’s Horticultural Passion
The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture has named “First Peas to the Table” by Susan Grigsby its 2016 Book of the Year. Monticello’s Curator of Gardens, Eleanor Gould, wrote an article celebrating the book, which “explores Thomas Jefferson’s horticultural passion while empowering kids to learn about the many lessons and delights of gardening.” The article includes information on Jefferson’s love of peas, school garden ideas, free lesson plans, a historical pea recipe and resources for teachers and students. More
