Solving the parallel problems of hunger and food waste in Story County has become the avocation of hundreds of current and past ISU faculty, staff and students. Retallick Receives National Teacher Mentor Award
Mike Retallick, agricultural education and studies, received the National Association of Agricultural Educators Teacher Mentor Award for region 3, given at the NAAE annual convention in New Orleans on Nov. 19. More
Science With Practice Poster Presentation, Dec. 9
This semester’s Science With Practice poster presentation open house will be Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Kildee Hall Atrium. More than 25 students are active in the program this fall. Science With Practice is a CALS experiential learning and work program for undergraduate students in agriculture. The program was featured in the Nov. 25 message from the Alliance for Iowa State. More
CALS Students Seek Funding for Uganda Training Center
CALS students that are part of a service learning project in Uganda are working with the ISU Foundation on a fundraising effort to help build a training center in Uganda’s Kamuli District. A video and information explaining the effort is available on the ISU crowdfunding website. Every dollar contributed to the fund will be matched twice, so a $1 contribution will total $3. The deadline to contribute is Dec. 31. This is the first venture in student crowdfunding through FundISU, a fundraising website for university projects seeking $10,000 or less.
Forestry Club Selling Christmas Trees
The Forestry Club is holding their annual Christmas tree fundraiser at the Reiman Gardens Parking Lot. Trees will be for sale: Friday, Dec. 4 and 11, 3 to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 5 and 12, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 13, 12 to 6 p.m. The club will have Fraser fir, balsam fir, and white and Scotch pine, as well as balsam fir wreaths. Proceeds go towards club activities and student development.
NAMA Selling Popcorn
The National Agri-Marketing Association’s ISU chapter is accepting orders for its annual gourmet popcorn fundraiser. Six ounce bags are available in seven different flavors for $4 a bag, or $11 for a three-bag combo pack. Orders are due Tuesday, Dec. 1. Funds raised will support travel to the national NAMA competition. Garrett Ley, an agricultural business student, makes and sells the popcorn around central Iowa through his business, G Pop’s Popcorn.
Horticulture Club Selling Poinsettias
The Horticulture Club’s annual poinsettia sale will take place: Wednesday, Dec. 2, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Harl Commons in Curtiss Hall; Thursday, Dec. 3, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Memorial Union Bookstore; Friday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., ground level of Beardshear Hall; and Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Reiman Gardens. The poinsettias are grown and sold by students in the club. More
Block and Bridle Club Selling Summer Sausage and Cheese
An online form is available for the Block and Bridle Club’s annual holiday summer sausage and cheese sale. The summer sausage is made on campus in the Meat Lab and the cheese (cheddar, Colby and pepper jack) is from Minnesota. Place orders by Dec. 10 to reserve products for Christmas. Money raised will be used for club trips, and shows and sales hosted by the club.

New Herbicide Publication for Corn and Soybean Producers
The status of weed control across the state and the most effective herbicides for tackling weeds are outlined in a recently released ISU Extension and Outreach publication. The “2016 Herbicide Guide for Iowa Corn and Soybean Production” was written by ISU Extension and Outreach weed specialists Bob Hartzler and Mike Owen.

AAAS Recognizes Reecy and Wise for Distinguished Science
The American Association for the Advancement of Science has announced this year's class of fellows, which includes James Reecy, professor of animal science and director of the Office of Biotechnology, and Roger Wise, research geneticist for USDA's Agricultural Research Service and collaborator professor of plant pathology and microbiology. More
Koziel Receives Distinguished Service Award
Jacek Koziel, associate professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poland. Koziel is currently servicing as a Fulbright Scholar at WUELS. More
United Way Update: CALS Surpasses Goal
As of Nov. 25, CALS has surpassed its goal of $68,000 by 6.35 percent with pledges and gifts totaling $72,319. ISU has raised $428,208, which is 103 percent of its overall goal of $415,000. More

Conservation biologist David Wilcove will present the Paul L. Errington Memorial Lecture on Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Wilcove, professor of public affairs and ecology and evolutionary biology at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, will speak on "Saving Biodiversity in Southeast Asia." Integrated NSF Support Promoting Interdisciplinary Research and Education
NSF has published a Dear Colleague Letter for the Integrated NSF Support Promoting Interdisciplinary Research and Education pilot program. INSPIRE was created to handle proposals whose scientific advances lie outside the scope of a single program. An INSPIRE award must be substantively co-funded by at least two intellectually distinct NSF divisions. Applicants may request up to $1,000,000 for projects of up to five years in duration. Proposals are accepted continuously. More
Seed Grant Program Proposals Due Jan. 19
The Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research is accepting proposals for their 2016 Seed Grant Program. A maximum of $35,000 per award will be provided for a one-year period for studies on global change, climate effects and regional environmental research related to global environmental problems. Projects that address big data applications are encouraged. Proposals are due Jan. 19. More
USDA to Hold Listening Session Dec. 4
The USDA will hold a listening session teleconference on Dec. 4 to help stakeholders understand and participate in planning for an increase in public access to scientific data funded by USDA. Comments will also be accepted via email through Dec. 9. More

CansGiving Event to Collect Food and Raise Awareness for the SHOP
CansGiving, a philanthropy event to collect canned food and raise awareness for the SHOP, ISU’s student food pantry, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gallery. Student teams will collect canned food and use them to construct a sculpture. Prizes will be awarded. The canned food will be donated to the SHOP food pantry in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

CALS Alum: After Avian Flu Scare, Plenty of Turkeys for Thanksgiving
Last summer, after a devastating outbreak of avian flu, the media was full of predictions that prices for the surviving turkeys would soar. But not only was there no shortage, turkeys were selling for some of the lowest prices in years. Brad Moline ('02 animal science, dairy science) is a turkey farmer near Manson, Iowa. Moline's operation was recently featured in the New York Times for its resiliency following an avian influenza outbreak this spring. More
