SPRING CONVOCATION SET FOR FEB. 16
The CALS Spring Convocation will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. The program includes brief comments from Dean Wintersteen and college award presentations. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.
CALS STUDENTS RECEIVE ALL-UNIVERSITY SENIOR AWARD
Five students will receive the Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award, and four of them are CALS students. The award recognizes outstanding seniors who display high character, outstanding achievement in academics and university/community activities, and promise for continuing these exemplary qualities as alumni. CALS recipients for 2012 are: Sam Bird, global resource systems and economics; Sagar Chawla, biology and global resource systems; Scott Henry, agricultural business, finance and international agriculture; and Amy Peyton, agricultural business, economics, public service and administration in agriculture and international agriculture. LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM CLAIMS TOP HONORS
The ISU Livestock Judging Team claimed first place at the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines on Sunday. ISU bested the field of 17 teams and also won the reasons division. Individually, Adam Darrington, a junior in agricultural studies, was first overall and third in reasons; Troy Sloan, a junior in agricultural studies, was second overall and first in reasons; and Colby Taber, a senior in agricultural studies, was second in reasons. Jonathan DeClerck, animal science, coaches the team.

Kelly Reynaga, a senior in food science, had a head start in her microbiology and food chemistry classes. GRADUATE STUDENTS RECEIVE BEST POSTER AWARDS FROM SEED GROUP
Two CALS students received awards from the Future Seed Executives committee of the American Seed Trade Association during the 2011 Seed Expo in Chicago. Erik Christian, a graduate student in agronomy, received second place for his presentation on "Alternating Temperatures Promote Seed Germination of Miscanthus Sinensis." Ruth Rolling, also a graduate student in agronomy, received third place for her presentation on the "Influence of Seed Priming on Agronomic Performance in Soybeans." Iowa pork producers can learn more about pig health and growth numbers, and get updates on ventilation management and disease research projects at the 2012 Iowa Pork Regional Conferences scheduled for March 6-9. STUDY SHOWS USING COVER CROPS INCREASES CORN YIELD

PROPOSALS ON PRESSING COMPUTER NEEDS FOR STUDENTS WILL BE CONSIDERED
The CALS Technology Advancement Committee will not issue a call for proposals this year. A decision was made to redirect the funds to a program that provides significant discounts for students on Microsoft software. Despite this change, the committee is willing to consider proposals from faculty and staff if there are pressing needs. Requests (using the current Computation Advisory Committee proposal format as an outline) may be submitted at any time to David Acker (dacker@iastate.edu, 4-3683) on behalf of the committee. Proposals should be limited to pressing needs for CALS students that cannot be funded through existing allocations of student computer fees to departments.

Applications for the Bailey Research Career Development Award are due March 1. Faculty split between two colleges should submit to the college in which they are tenured. Applications submitted to CALS should be sent electronically to Joe Colletti (colletti@iastate.edu) and to the applicant's department chair. The signature page does not need signatures for the college-level submission. Applicants are asked to provide the names of two or three suggested internal reviewers from any department. BRAND NAMES AND TRADEMARKS
Brand names that are trademarks "“ often so indicated in dictionaries "“ should be capitalized if they must be used. A better choice is to substitute a generic term when available. Although the symbols ® and â„¢ (for registered and unregistered trademarks, respectively) often accompany trademark names on product packaging and in promotional material, there is no legal requirement to use these symbols and they should be omitted wherever possible. If one of these symbols must be used at the end of a product name, it should appear before any period, comma or other mark of punctuation.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR NORMAL BORLAUG AWARD
Nominations are sought for the Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation. The new $10,000 annual award, administered by the World Food Prize Foundation, will be presented for the first time in October 2012. The award will recognize a young extension worker, research scientist, development professional or other individual who best emulates the dedication, perseverance and innovation demonstrated by Norman Borlaug while working in the field with farmers in Mexico during the 1940s and 50s. EXPAND COMMUNICATION CIRCLES ON WEATHER, CLIMATE
"One of the most enduring needs of societies rich and poor is for reliable and timely information on the weather and, increasingly, on the causes and consequences of grander-scale shifts in the climate system itself. But an enormous gap persists between what is possible and what is happening. My sense is that the gap between information and impact can be substantially reduced simply if more scientists and scholars, and their institutions, think creatively about ways to expand their communication circles and pathways." Andrew Revkin is a senior fellow for environmental understanding at Pace University Academy for Applied Environmental Studies and writer of the Dot.Earth blog for The New York Times.
