SCHULTZ HONORED BY ARBORICULTURE SOCIETY CHAPTER<br>
Dick Schultz, natural resource ecology and management, was presented the President’s Award Feb. 18 by the Midwestern Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. The President’s award recognizes an individual who has provided a significant impact in the field of arboriculture during the previous two years. Chip Murrow, a former student of Schultz and an Iowa State forestry alumnus, presented the award as chapter president. The presentation was part of the chapter’s conference held last week in Columbia, Mo.<br>

SPURLOCK ONE OF TWO DIRECTORS APPOINTED TO NWRC<br>
Two ISU faculty members who study relationships among food, physical activity, metabolism, and health have been named to direct the Nutrition and Wellness Research Center. Mike Spurlock, food science and human nutrition, will serve as director of integrative and translational research. Greg Welk, kinesiology, will serve as director of clinical research and community outreach.
MILLER FACULTY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM PROPOSALS DUE MARCH 8<br>
A call for proposals has been issued for the 2010-11 Miller Faculty Fellowship Program. Miller Fellowships are intended to provide faculty with opportunities to enhance undergraduate academic programs and to develop innovative approaches to enhance student learning. Those submitting proposals from CALS are asked to submit them electronically to David Acker and CELT by March 8.

CALS PRESENTS AWARDS TO FACULTY, STAFF
CALS presented annual awards to faculty and staff at its spring semester convocation on Feb. 12. A news release of all winners and PowerPoint from the convocation is available online.

DOUBLED HAPLOID FACILITY PROVIDES TIME-SAVING PROCESS FOR RESEARCHERS<br>
The development of homozygous lines is an important, but time-consuming process in plant breeding and research. The induction and subsequent doubling of haploids is an efficient alternative to generate homozygous offspring in two generations. The Doubled Haploid Facility is now open to provide this service for maize to ISU scientists, but is also open to other academic researchers and breeders. The Department of Agronomy is supporting the start-up phase.

SPALDING RECEIVES GRANT TO STUDY STACKING TRAITS IN ALGAE<br>
Martin Spalding, genetics, development and cell biology, received a $4.37 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a micro-algal platform that will allow micro-algae to be treated as a crop. Lately, biofuels research has included a focus on using algae as a source for biofuels.

THE COVER BOYS OF PLANT SCIENCE<br>
Erik Vollbrecht, Patrick Schnable and Adam Bogdanove have achieved cover boy status – each capturing a cover story in Nature, Science and Science, respectively. Bogdanove, plant pathology, studies the molecular equipment a particular bacterial pest uses to infect and multiply in rice. Vollbrecht, genetics, development and cell biology, works to understand natural and domesticated species and the differences between them. Schnable, agronomy, led a coordinated effort culminating in the maize genome sequence, plus the demonstration of its usefulness.

COLLEGIATE FFA HOSTS PANCAKE BREAKFAST TUESDAY, FEB. 23<br>
Collegiate FFA is hosting a pancake breakfast in celebration of FFA week Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 7 to 9 a.m. in Kildee Pavilion. Celebrity chefs will be serving pancakes and scrambled eggs. The event is free to students, faculty and staff. <br>

TURF CLUB WINS TURF BOWL COMPETITION EIGHTH TIME IN NINE YEARS<br>
The ISU Turf Club won first place at the 2010 Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition at the annual Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s education conference on Feb. 11 in San Diego. This is the eighth time the team has won the competition over the past nine years. The winning team members, who are all horticulture majors, include Nick Dunlap, a junior from Iowa City; Tyler Dykstra, a senior from Sibley; Bryan Huinker, a senior from Lakeville, Minn.; and Caleb Swanson, a senior from Nevada.

2010 ANIMAL INDUSTRY REPORTS POSTED ON WEB SITE<br>
The Department of Animal Science’s 2010 Animal Industry Report is posted on the Web. The report details research activities related to beef, dairy, equine, poultry, sheep, swine and companion animal industries in the state. The research is conducted to support the viability of these industries in Iowa.

MUSCATINE ISLAND RESEARCH FARM CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY<br>
The 2010 annual meeting of the Muscatine Island Research Farm will be held March 2. This will mark 75 years of ISU and the Muscatine Island community working together to advance agriculture through activities at the research farm. In 1935, a group of progressive “truck crop” growers seeking solutions to crop problems rented land from the Rock Island Railroad and entered into a cooperative agreement with ISU to establish the research farm. This productive partnership continues today. <br>

CALS ENTOMOLOGISTS TO SPEAK AT “DAY OF INSECTS,” MARCH 6<br>
The second annual Day of Insects will be held March 6, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Reiman Gardens. Presentations will cover many topics related to insects. Speakers will include John VanDyk, Matt O’Neal, Royce Bitzer and Marlin Rice, entomology.

“AMES READS LEOPOLD” EVENT SET FOR MARCH 6<br>
Excerpts from “A Sand County Almanac,” written by Iowa native Aldo Leopold, will be read aloud on March 6 as part of the third annual “Ames Reads Leopold” event. HURD RESPONDS TO CBS NEWS SEGMENTS ON ANTIBIOTICS USE IN AG<br>
A web posting dated Feb. 10 by Dr. H. Scott Hurd of ISU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, consists of written responses to claims made by last week’s CBS Evening News stories on antibiotic use in agriculture. Hurd is an associate professor and a former USDA Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety.

THORESON REFLECTS ON HIS EXTENSION CAREER<br>
As Dale Thoreson, dairy, beef and forage specialist, looks back over his career with ISU Extension, he said most days were a joy to go to work. “People can’t ask for too much more than that.
