Vice Provost for Extension Jack Payne's Forum to be Rescheduled

The open forum with Jack Payne, has been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date. Payne was planning a short presentation from 3:10 to 3:55 p.m. in 1951 Food Sciences Building.

Iowa Farm Bureau Gift Announcement Set for Today

A news event will be held today, June 12, to announce a $1 million gift from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to support Iowa State's Bioeconomy Program. The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Iowa Farm Bureau Pavilion in Kildee Hall at Iowa State.

U.S. Pork Center of Excellence Announces First Offering

The U.S. Pork Center of Excellence was established in 2005 as a public/private partnership to bring together academic expertise in research, teaching and extension related to pork production. A news conference was held at the World Pork Expo June 9 to announce the Center's first extension offering -- a new information network to provide pork producers with an easy way to get answers to everyday challenges in pork production.

Agricultural Knowledge Initiative Grants Program Meeting June 23

Faculty interested in preparing applications for the U.S.-India Agricultural Knowledge Initiative are invited to an informational meeting June 23. The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges plans to award 10 grants of approximately $60,000 (or up to $120,000 for multiple institutions) in one of two areas: capacity building and water management. Applications are due July 14. The informational meeting will be 1 p.m. in Room 142 Custiss Hall. Ramesh Kanwar, agricultural and biosystems engineering, and David Acker, associate dean-Academic and Global Programs will provide background on the grants program.

Sigma Alpha Sorority Online Auction Ends Tonight

The Sigma Alpha sorority is holding an online basket auction through 8 p.m. tonight, June 12. Proceeds will help support Sigma Alpha projects such as, Ag in the Classroom, Inspiration Week and the Ag Etiquette Dinner. Contact: Christy Yuska, cyuska@iastate.edu.

Avian Influenza Fact Sheets Online

Avian influenza fact sheets have been prepared for the Research and Demonstration Farms staff, farmers and pet owners. The fact sheets give guidelines for protecting poultry and pets should the avian influenza be found in the United States. Dr. Darrell Trampel, ISU Extension poultry veterinarian and poultry diagnostician, wrote the original text for the research farms fact sheet and a more general one was developed at the request of the College's Avian Influenza Issue Team. Both are available on the web as PDFs.

Northeast Research Farm to Build Borlaug Learning Center

The Northeast Iowa Agricultural Experimental Association, which owns the Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm, has approved construction of the Borlaug Learning Center, according to the Waterloo Courier. An estimated $150,000 to $200,000 will have to be raised for construction to begin next spring. Iowa State Research and Demonstration Farms is contributing a like amount. The 5,000-square-foot building will contain two large meeting rooms, office space for farm officials, ISU Extension agriculture specialists and visiting researchers. Comments Sought on National Research Initiative Proposals

The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service seeks comments on proposed updates and technical corrections to the administrative provisions of the National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program. The deadline for submitting comments is Aug. 7. All questions about this solicitation should be directed to the point of contact listed in the APHIS announcement. The text of the CSREES solicitation is available online.
