AG2PI Announces Grants, National Conference
The Iowa State-led Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative has awarded seven new grants for projects that advance multidisciplinary crop and livestock genetics research. One project is being led by Lush Chair for Animal Breeding and Genetics Juan Steibel, working with James Koltes, animal science, and partners at Michigan State University. AG2PI will host an in-person conference in Kansas City, Missouri, June 15-16. The event, “Mapping the future of agricultural genome to phenome research,” which will showcase a number of the initiative’s seed grant projects, is open to the public, but registration will be required and space is limited. CALS Academy for Team Science Offering New Seed Grant Opportunities
The CALS Academy for Team Science is offering two seed grants for $40,000 each and five additional grants for $5,000 each to develop team research projects. Teams can cross departments and colleges, but must include at least one designated CALS faculty member who will manage the funds awarded. CALS faculty member(s) involved must be on an active Hatch and/or Hatch Multistate project that is up-to-date on reporting. More

Seed Business Management Webinar Series Begins Today
The Graduate Program in Seed Technology and Business is holding its free Seed Business Management webinar series at noon beginning today, April 17, and running through Friday, April 21. This year’s topics include vertical farming, seed exporting, seed regulations and seed treatment updates. More
Ugandan Baskets for Sale in the Union
The Workspace in the Memorial Union and the Uganda Alliance Club are hosting a pop-up basket sale April 10-22, from 2-9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The baskets are handmade by members of the Tusubila crafts group and support women artists and their families in Kamuli, Uganda. The initiative began through Iowa State's Uganda Program. Students studying abroad saw that market access was limited for the basket artists and formed the Uganda Alliance Club. Students work with the Tusubila group to bring baskets to the United States, sell them and send the money back to the artists. More
Antique Tractor Club Hosting Show on April 29
The Antique Tractor Club at Iowa State is holding a spring tractor show on April 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Molecular Biology Building, Lot 29. A pedal tractor raffle will be held at 1:30 p.m. Faculty and staff are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the show. The Titanium Lunchbox food truck will be there, along with Dairy Science Club ice cream.

Celebrate ISU Extension and Outreach Week, April 17-22
ISU Extension and Outreach Week is this week, April 17-22. On Wednesday, April 19, extension and outreach advancement staff and Cy will be handing out #StrongIowa stickers and other items to all who stop, 1:30-2:30 p.m. on central campus. Iowa’s 100 county extension offices also will host events throughout the week to thank Iowans for their support of extension education efforts throughout the state. More
Webinar Series Provides Expert Advice on Cybersecurity Concerns
A series of webinars dedicated to strengthening the digital protections in place for farm businesses and families is being offered at noon today through Wednesday, April 17-19. Each session will include a 30-minute presentation, as well as time for questions. Webinars will be recorded for later viewing. More
New Videos Document Iowa’s Wetlands
The diversity and importance of Iowa’s Wetlands is captured in a new set of 13 educational videos recorded under the direction of Adam Janke, ISU Extension and Outreach, and Kay Stefanik, Iowa Nutrient Research Center. They are available on YouTube and will be used to educate Iowans and others about the biodiversity and function of wetlands. More

Retallick Receives CELT Award
Mike Retallick, chair of agricultural education and studies, received the Extra-Meritorious Service Award for dedicated efforts to improve teaching and learning at Iowa State, presented by the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.
Iowa State Approves Term Faculty Promotions
The Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost announced promotions for 37 term faculty for the 2023-24 academic year, including the following from CALS: Steven Bell and David Eisenmann, agricultural and biosystems engineering; Awoke Dollisso, Theressa Cooper and Kristine Tidgren, agricultural education and studies; Dorothy Masinde and Catherine Swoboda, horticulture; Amber Anderson and Marin Harbur, agronomy; Miyoung Oh, economics; Jennifer Schieltz, natural resource ecology and management; and Boris Jovanovic, ecology, evolution and organismal biology. Hertz Lecture Available Online
The Carl and Marjory Hertz Lecture on Emerging Issues in Agriculture presented by Tim Glenn, executive vice president of the seed business unit for Corteva Agriscience, is now available online. Glenn presented “Industry Perspectives and Emerging Trends in the Global Agriculture” on April 11. More

April 24: United Way Food Drive Begins
The United Way of Story County 2023 Live United Food Drive runs April 24-May 4. Drop off sites on campus include Curtiss Hall first floor rotunda and Kildee Hall atrium. Donations benefit the SHOP, Sloss House Pantry, Bone Appetite at Vet Med and more than 15 local pantries. More
May 17: CALS Faculty and Staff Picnic
CALS faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the end of the semester at a picnic on May 17 from 4:30-7 p.m. at Moore Memorial Park, Big Bluestem Shelter. Dinner, dessert and live music will be provided. Family and guests are welcome to attend. RSVP by May 10.

Jack Trice Sculpture Wins Masonry Institute Award
The sculpture “Breaking Barriers” won a 2023 Masonry Institute of Iowa Appreciation Award. It was judged on contribution to the masonry industry, community impact, visual appearance, construction detailing and workmanship quality. “Breaking Barriers” by artist Ivan Toth Depeña features bronze cleat prints in the Albaugh Family Plaza floor leading up to an Artstone portal in the form of Iowa State offensive lineman Jack Trice. Visitors can walk through the sculpture, following in Trice’s footsteps. More
