Happy Beautiful Monday, CALS Colleagues – I hope this finds each of you well. I am back in the office today after a week at our campus in Uganda, and then a week of vacation. As I mentioned in last Monday’s message – the work we do in Uganda is amazing, and a terrific complement to the work we do here at home. Iowa focused, globally engaged - a key part of the CALS Advantage!... As we approach the July 4 holiday, the end of one and beginning of another budget year, and what seems to feel like the beginning of the downhill part of our academic summer, your college is in great shape… More

Hargrove Named Chair of BBMB
Mark Hargrove has been named chair of the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Hargrove will begin a five-year term as chair effective July 1. He will take over department chair responsibilities from current professor and chair Kristen Johansen, who has led the department since 2016. Johansen will remain a faculty member in the department. Lanningham-Foster Named Chair of FSHN
Lorraine Lanningham-Foster has been named chair of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, effective July 1. She has been serving as the department’s interim chair since July 2021. During her time as interim department chair, Lanningham-Foster has led the department in improving communication, as well as implementing the new “You’re the Best!” peer-appreciation award. She also oversaw the launching and restructuring of the Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics graduate program and supported the RN-to-BSN Program through its accreditation process. More
Ross Named Chair of Animal Science
Jason Ross has been named chair of the Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Ross, Lloyd L. Anderson Professor in Physiology, has been a faculty member in the department since 2008. In July of last year, he was named associate chair for industry engagement. He also serves as director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center. His department chair responsibilities will take effect Aug. 16. More

Egg Industry Center Releases Updated Study on Post-Production Costs
The Egg Industry Center has released an updated study to help the U.S. egg industry with post-production cost information. The PCT study (processing, cartoning and transporting) helps egg farmers compare industry costs with their own operational costs of processing, putting eggs in cartons and transporting eggs to market. More
Survey of Women Landowners Shows Issues they Care about Most
Nearly 360 women landowners in Iowa shared their experiences on owning and operating farmland in a recent survey conducted by ISU Extension and Outreach. Results showed a majority of women are interested in information about landowner responsibilities, the economics of farmland ownership, crop production costs and determining the right rental rates. More

June 29: Reclaiming Iowa’s Abandoned Coal Mines
The Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar on Wednesday, June 29, at noon, will feature Vince Sitzmann, mines and minerals bureau chief at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Sitzmann is leading efforts through the IDALS Abandoned Mine Land Program to reclaim some 12,000 acres across 300 abandoned surface coal mine sites in Iowa to return them to working lands.

Does ‘Farmers Market’ Have an Apostrophe?
Associated Press typically recommends leaving out the apostrophe when a phrase is descriptive rather than showing possession. The market is used by the farmers and populated by the farmers, but generally is not owned by the farmers. It is acting like an adjective; it is there to identify the type of market. The CALS Communications Service and the ISU Extension to Agriculture and Natural Resources communications office follow AP style and do not use an apostrophe in farmers market.

Nominations Sought for 2022 Hatch Lecture
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Association of Public Land-grant Universities are seeking nominations for the William Henry Hatch Lecture to be presented at the APLU annual meeting in Denver on Nov. 6-8. The lecture commemorates the efforts of William Hatch, who championed the Agricultural Experiment Station Founding Bill, and celebrates the accomplishments of the experiment station system that the Hatch Act created. More

Art Walk Focuses on Stone in Public Art
University Museums docent Rae Reilly will lead Art Walk: Stone in Public Art on Wednesday, June 29, from noon to 1 p.m. The tour will begin in the lobby of Kildee Hall at Balance of Life, a wall-length mural by Edward Smyth. The sculpture symbolizes the monumental role animal agriculture plays in economic prosperity, both now and in the future. Smyth used stone, glass, gold and painted wood panels. More
