Hello CALS Colleagues – As you know there is much conversation about COVID, how it continues to impact us and the ways in which we are each managing our exposure and response. Last week we received updated guidance from our institution as our leadership works intently on this issue. Please take maximum advantage of that guidance and be a role model for others around you… Last week I had some very important conversations about the coming semester with our CALS Staff Council under Nate Dobbels’ leadership and then with the chair of our CALS Faculty Senate Caucus, Virginia Hanson. Lawrence-Dill Named Associate Dean for Research and Discovery
Carolyn Lawrence-Dill has been named associate dean for research and discovery for the college, effective today, Aug. 16. She has been a faculty member at Iowa State since 2014. She is a professor in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology and the Department of Agronomy, and a faculty scholar with the university’s Plant Sciences Institute. In her new role, Lawrence-Dill will provide the dean, department chairs and other unit directors with strategic guidance and counsel on opportunities and challenges related to the effective and compliant conduct of the research enterprise of the college. More


CARD Study on Labor Issues in Pork Production Gets New Attention
A 2018 CARD study on “Labor Issues and Trends in U.S. Pork Production,” originally co-authored by Lee Schulz, economics, and recently updated by economics graduate student Holly Cook, is getting new attention from industry and media. More

Animal Science Student Receives $25,000 Scholarship
Megan Abeyta, animal science graduate student working with Lance Baumgard, was recently awarded the 2021-2022 John Brandt Memorial Scholarship through the Land O’Lakes Inc. Foundation. The $25,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student pursuing a dairy-related degree. More

“I See Dead Plants” Podcast Now Available
“I See Dead Plants” is a new podcast released by the Integrated Pest Management program to help listeners learn how plant science research impacts everyday life. The episodes are made available through ISU Extension and Outreach and can be accessed on the IPM website, Apple Podcasts and Spotify. More

Northeast Farm Field Day Scheduled for Aug. 27
The annual fall field day at the Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. Drought, markets and water drainage will be the topics of the day. The event is free and open to the public. More

Strip-till Focus of Research Farms Field Day
An update on the latest advancement in strip tillage is the focus of the fall field day at Iowa State’s Agricultural Engineering and Agronomy Research Farms, to be held Sept. 8. Attendance is free but registration is required. More

INRC Leads Workshop for K-12 Educators
A recent workshop hosted by the Iowa Nutrient Research Center and the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation introduced 23 K-12 educators from 21 schools in Iowa and Pennsylvania to a variety of Iowa State faculty, staff and graduate students and their water quality research and demonstration projects. More

Wendel Receives ICAC Researcher of the Year Award
Jonathan Wendel, ecology, evolution and organismal biology, received the International Cotton Advisory Committee Researcher of the Year Award for 2021. His research focuses on mechanisms underlying plant genomic and phenotypic diversify. More

Economists Recognized by AAEA
Helen Jensen and Wendong Zhang, economics, were recognized for their work at the 2021 Agricultural and Applied Economics Association annual meeting held Aug. 1-3 in Austin, Texas. Jensen was recognized for her many contributions to the AAEA and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Zhang received the Distinguished Extension/Outreach Program Award in the less than 10 years’ experience category. More

Macintosh Elected to ASPB Leadership Line
Gustavo Macintosh, biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology, was named president-elect for the American Society of Plant Biologists. He will serve one year as president-elect, one year as president and then one year as past president. His term begins Oct. 1. More

Sociologists Recognized for Opioid Overdose Research
David Peters and Andrew Hochstetler, sociology and criminal justice, received the 2021 Fred Buttel Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Award from the Rural Sociological Society for their study “The Opioid Hydra: Understanding overdose Mortality Epidemics and Syndemics Across the Rural-Urban Continuum.” More

Dobill Wins Agronomy’s Campbell Award
Dan Dobill, associate teaching professor, received the 2021 Campbell Award from Iowa State’s MS Agronomy program. He is a sales effectiveness manager at Corteva Agriscience covering the southern United States. He teaches Agronomy 502 and has taught more than 400 students over the years. More

New Position for Elobeid
Amani Elobeid, adjunct associate professor, is the new Ron and Lynn Deiter Endowed Chair for Sustaining Excellence in Agricultural Business, Teaching Professor – Agricultural Economics, effective today, Aug. 16. More

Iowa Learning Farms and Water Rocks! Welcome Two New Hires
Richard Frailing and Alex Kirstukas have joined Iowa Learning Farms and the Water Rocks! program as education and outreach specialists. Frailing has experience as an educator, artist, musician and writer. Kirstukas is a musician, writer, theatre artist and literary translator. More

New Industry Group Joins ISRC
UPL has joined the Iowa Soybean Research Center as its 10th industry partner. In this role, UPL provides financial support to the center and will have a representative serving on the ISRC’s industry advisory council, which provides guidance on research funding priorities for the center. More

Ehsan Ghane, Michigan State University, will present “Designing Drainage Systems for Maximizing Profit and Protecting Water Quality,” at the Iowa Learning Farms webinar on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at noon. More

Aug. 25: SoyFest
The Iowa Soybean Research Center will host SoyFest on Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on central campus near Parks Library. August is Soybean Month in Iowa and the event will highlight the importance of soy, its many uses and emerging soy products. Also, there will be a free cookout, soy-related snacks and samples, cooking and robotic demonstrations, giveaways, photo booth, carnival games and a visit by Cy the Mascot. More

In a letter to the campus community last week, President Wendy Wintersteen shared public health measures for fall semester 2021. “As you read through these items, please remember that every choice you make has the potential to contribute positively to the overall health of our campus community,” Wintersteen wrote. Town Hall Scheduled for Aug. 19
A virtual town hall for faculty and staff on public health measures for fall semester will be held Thursday, Aug. 19 from 1 to 2 p.m. via WebEx. Guests will include Dr. Dan Fulton, infectious disease expert with McFarland Clinic, and Les White, director of Story County Public Health. More

Iowa State to Offer Fall COVID Vaccine Clinics
Iowa State’s Thielen Student Health Center will offer free vaccination clinics for students, faculty and staff beginning Tuesday, Aug. 17. Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome. Schedule an appointment online or call 4-5801 and bring your ISUCard to the clinic. More


Thomson Celebrity Showman at Governor’s Charity Steer Show
Dr. Dan Thomson, animal science, participated in the annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show held Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Iowa State Fair. Thomson partnered with Dee Zee, Inc. and Michael Frisbie to show his steer, “Blackie.” The steers are then sold at auction with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. More
