Welcome back to campus if you have been working remotely. Agronomist Co-Authors New CAST Commentary
Jianming Yu, agronomy, is co-author of The Role of Agricultural Science and Technology in Climate 21 Project Implementation, a new commentary published by the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology. More


Teaching and Students

CALS Study Abroad Office Accepting Applications
The CALS Study Abroad office is accepting applications for the Soils, Crops and Water of Costa Rica travel course for fall 2021. The applications deadline is Aug. 1. This is one of a few select travel courses that will be offered for fall 2021. More Jessica Boertje, CALS Study Abroad advisor, will be presenting study abroad opportunities to freshman 110 and transfer classes this fall. Contact Boertje (jboertje@iastate.edu) to request a class or group presentation.

Submit Proposals for Learning Across America Program
The Dean’s Office of Academic Innovation is requesting proposals to support faculty and staff led groups of undergraduate students traveling to domestic locations. CALS launched Learning Across America in 2019 to complement its nationally recognized study abroad program. Proposals are due Aug. 19.


Extension and Outreach

Steil Named New Consumer Horticulture Specialist
Aaron Steil is the new consumer horticulture specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. He is working on a new delivery method to help county extension staff provide answers locally. Steil began June 14, following the retirement of horticulture specialist Richard Jauron. More

Wine Grape Field Day Scheduled for Aug. 11
The 2021 Wine Grape Field Day will be held Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Horticulture Research Station. The event will feature research and demonstrations from faculty, staff and extension specialists in horticulture, food science and human nutrition, the Horticulture Research Station and the Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute. The event is limited to 20 participants. There is no charge to attend, but registration is required. More

Retallick Reappointed as Department Chair
Mike Retallick, professor and chair of agricultural education and studies, has been reappointed to another five-year term as department chair.

Open Forums for Two Remaining Candidates
for CALS Associate Dean for Research and Discovery
The two remaining candidates for the new position of CALS Associate Dean for Research and Discovery will be providing a public seminar and open forum on the topic of “Vision for the CALS Research and Discovery Enterprise: Short- and Long-term Goals and Strategies in a Land Grant Context.” All seminars and open forums will take place in 0118 Horticulture Hall. They will also be live-streamed. Zoom links to the forums and candidates’ application material is available online. Kendall Lamkey, chair of the Department of Agronomy, is chairing this search. The position replaces the associate director of research portion of the former senior associate dean position held by Joe Colletti.

A video of the retirement celebration held June 30 honoring Joe Colletti, senior associate dean and associate director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Carla Persaud, administrative assistant, and Josie Six, senior manager of budget and finance who has transitioned to the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods, is available online.

Ted Corrigan, chief executive officer and general manager of Des Moines Water Works, will present “The Increasing Challenge of Producing Safe Drinking Water” during the Iowa Learning Farms webinar on Wednesday, July 7, at noon.

Five 45-minute tours on Friday, July 9, with a University Museums staff member or docent each considers a different theme and highlights one of the country’s largest public art collections. Tours are free. Registration is requested. More

New Iowa History Exhibition Will Travel to 99 Counties
The State Historical Society of Iowa’s mobile museum is back on the road with a new exhibit after a 16-month break for the COVID-19 pandemic. Housed in a custom-built Winnebago, the  museum will carry “Iowa History 101: Iowa’s People and Places” to all 99 Iowa counties beginning in July and running through 2023. More
