Dean’s Message

I hope you had a good weekend. Very soon we’ll arrive at July 1 – return to work on-campus day. I know for many of us it’s been a treat to get back on campus and have the pleasure of hallway chats, shared coffee breaks, collaborative discussions, and so many more of the things that shape the ways we know people and get our work done. I truly believe we inspire each other by being together in our work environments. I also know that for some of us, there has been recognition of the advantages of working from home and other remote locations during the pandemic, and that getting back to campus full-time will represent a back-to-the-future challenge. We are a place that thrives in-person, and we want you all in that mix. I attended several great meetings last week… More

AG2PI Wins NIFA Award for Next Phase
A second $960,000 award from USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture will expand the impact of the Iowa State-led Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative, creating a shared vision across research communities for crops, livestock and data engineering. Patrick Schnable, agronomy and director of the Plant Sciences Institute, is project director for the transdisciplinary, multi-institutional grant. More


New Nitrate Sensor Developed at Iowa State
Iowa State agronomy researchers, including Michael Castellano, Sotirios Archontoulis and graduate student Yunjiao Zhu, teamed up with electrical engineering specialists on campus to create a new sensor that measures soil nitrate more accurately and faster than traditional methods. Their innovative technology is featured in the May/June issue of the Soil Science Society of America Journal. Pairing Solar Energy and Pollinator Habitat
Matthew O’Neal, entomology, co-authored a recent paper with scientists at the University of Illinois addressing the potential of pairing solar energy with pollinator habitat. Their paper, in the journal Environmental Entomology, offers recommendations for scientific evaluation and meaningful standards. More

DeLong to Lead Iowa State’s Water Quality Program
Catherine DeLong has been named the newest manager of ISU Extension and Outreach’s Water Quality Program. She began June 14. The position was previously held by Jamie Benning, now assistant director for Agriculture and Natural Resources with ISU Extension and Outreach. More

Conservation Stations Receive Innovation Award
Iowa Learning Farms and Water Rocks! have been recognized by the Soil and Water Conservation Society with the 2021 Conservation Innovation Award for their Conservation Station trailers. More

Crespi Named to Carbon Sequestration Task Force
John Crespi, director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, has been named to a task force to explore carbon sequestration and the opportunities it presents for further economic development in the state of Iowa. The task force will be chaired by Governor Kim Reynolds. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig will serve as vice chair. More

Grant Supports Savvy Leaders in Research Program
Research Savvy Leaders in Animal Science, a new collaboration between Iowa State and North Carolina A&T State University, is helping develop the future workforce in animal science. The program is supported by a USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant. ISU faculty involved are Susan Lamont, animal science, and Theressa Cooper, assistant dean for diversity. The program is designed specifically for women undergraduates, an under-represented group in professional leadership in the animal science industry. More

Colletti, Persaud Retirement Virtual Celebration June 30
Senior Associate Dean and Associate Director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station Joe Colletti retires June 30 following a 43-career in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Carla Persaud, administrative assistant, also is retiring on June 30 after 27 years of service at Iowa State. The two will be recognized during a virtual celebration hosted by the college via Zoom on Wednesday, June 30, at 3 p.m. Josie Six, senior manager of budget and finance, also will be recognized as she transitions to serve the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods. The CALS display on the main floor of the Student Innovation Center showcases a sampling of the many innovative projects CALS students and faculty are involved with – tracking monarch butterfly movement; planting pollinator-friendly, edge-of-field prairie strips to protect soil and water quality; addressing global food insecurity and more. It will be on display through the fall semester. More
