Crossroads: From Surviving to Thriving
Almost as quickly as the pandemic descended upon Iowa State last March, donors reached out to step up their support for students in need. In CALS, an infusion of funds allowed more than $320,000 to be promptly distributed to 183 students in need. In response to receiving financial support, Angelia Intini (above right), a junior in animal science, wrote to Howard Tyler (left), assistant dean of student services and success, “I have no idea how I can thank you. I don’t know if I ever can, but I know someday I wish to pay it forward.” More

University Town Hall Meeting Set for Thursday
A letter from President Wintersteen on April 19 addressed the 2021-2022 academic year and transitioning to pre-pandemic levels of campus engagement. Faculty and staff will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about employee expectations at a virtual University Town Hall meeting on Thursday, April 29, at 1 p.m.

CALS Faculty and Staff Gathering, May 3
Join Daniel J. Robison, endowed dean’s chair, for a CALS faculty and staff gathering on May 3. The event will take place in a tent on central campus, outside the main entrance of Curtiss Hall, from 4 to 6 p.m. The gathering will include live music and Cyclones Care safety guidelines including face-coverings, physical distancing and pre-packaged snacks to take following the event. Brief remarks will be made by Dean Robison at 5 p.m. Registration requested.


Cover Crops Work Best Paired with Livestock
Alejandro Plastina, economics, outlined several Iowa State analyses that evaluate the economic feasibility of cover crops in a recent article for Wallace’s Farmer, concluding that cover crops have the best change of net positive returns in integrated crop and livestock systems. More

Intensive Intervention Program Helps CALS Students
CALS launched the SMART Steps program in spring 2019 to provide holistic support to college students whose extenuating circumstances left them at risk for academic dismissal. Audrey Kennis, the college’s retention coordinator, said providing the needed structure for academically struggling students is the goal of the program, which stands for Student Management and Academic Response Team. Cyclone Stampede Rodeo Scheduled for this Weekend
The Rodeo Club at Iowa State is hosting its 58th Cyclone Stampede Rodeo – the last student run rodeo in the nation – on April 30 and May 1 at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. More

Updated resources from ISU Extension and Outreach are available to help livestock producers track their cost of production and work through price insurance options. The Livestock Enterprise Budgets for Iowa and Livestock Risk Insurance Plans for Cattle Producers are available in the April edition of Ag Decision Maker. More

Beef Improvement Federation Meeting Set for June 22-25
Iowa State will host the 2021 Beef Improvement Federation meeting on June 22-25 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. The program will include an evening social and dinner at the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center on campus, said Dan Loy, director of the Iowa Beef Center. Registration is now open. More

Kanwar Selected as Jefferson Science Fellow
Ramesh Kanwar, agricultural and biosystems engineering, has been selected for the 2021-2022 Jefferson Science Fellows Program. He will work with the U.S. Agency for International Development on the Environment Team in the Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean, Office of Regional Sustainable Development. More

Rinker Presented with Frevert Professorship
Skyler Rinker, agricultural education and studies, was presented with the James and Clare Frevert Ag450 Program Professorship at an April 19 medallion ceremony. The professorship recognizes and provides support for the professor-in-charge of the Iowa State Ag 450 Farm, which is the only student-managed farm at a land-grant university in the nation and has been in operation nearly 75 years. Agriculture Honor Society Presents Awards
Gamma Sigma Delta, the Iowa Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture, hosted a virtual Initiation and Awards Ceremony. Four faculty members, 15 undergraduate students and 41 veterinary medicine and graduate students were initiated into the honor society. The following CALS faculty, students and alumni were presented awards at the ceremony. More

P&S Council Presents CYtation Awards
The Professional and Scientific Council announced recipients of its 2020 CYtation Awards. Daryl Herzmann, agronomy, Samantha Soi Meng Lei, animal science, and Lina Rodriguez-Salamanca, plant pathology and microbiology, received CYtation Awards. Susan Deblieck, horticulture, received the Outstanding New P&S Council Member CYtation award. More

Gomes Joins Iowa State as Digital and Precision Agriculture CTO
Nadilia Gomez joins Iowa State as the new chief technology officer for the digital and precision agriculture research and innovation platform. She will work closely with the platform lead and director of the Plant Sciences Institute, Pat Schnable, and research teams at Iowa State to identify technologies with commercial potential in the digital and precision agriculture space. Iowa State Hires First Full Time Research Integrity Officer
Dianah Ngonyama is Iowa State’s new – and first full time – research integrity officer. Previously, the RIO role was part of one of the associate vice president positions within the Office of the Vice President for Research. More

United Way Food Drive is April 26-May 6
United Way of Story County is hosting its 13th annual LIVE UNITED food drive April 26-May 6. There are six drop-off locations around campus and monetary donations can be made online. Story County is home to more than 20 food pantries, including the SHOP food pantry in Beyer Hall. More

A video highlighting the newly released Iowa’s Nature Series was released on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day. Featuring illustrations created by pre-medical illustration students at Iowa State, each article in the series provides introductory information on many dimensions of Iowa’s biological and geological diversity.
