CALS Fall Career Fair Scheduled for Oct. 8
CALS Career Services director Mike Gaul and administrative specialist Lois Benning team up to offer the nation’s largest agriculture and life sciences career fair each fall. Three part-time students round out the staff, including Trent Taglauer and Claire Campbell, shown above. An integral part of the team is more than 40 CALS students and career day volunteers. “It’s amazing the quality of students we have,” said Gaul, who has served as director for 21 years. The college has maintained a consistent placement rate of at least 97 percent for the last two decades. This fall’s career fair will be held Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. Learn more about the college’s Career Services office in a recent STORIES article.
Research
Training Available this Week on New Research Tool
CALS, with the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost and the Office of the Vice President for Research, has entered into a subscription agreement to offer faculty members new access to Research Insight, a tool to build successful interdisciplinary research teams and identify relevant funding opportunities. Research Insight is a search program that helps faculty members identify potential collaboration partners and networks not only on campus, but nationwide as well. The tool can be used to identify qualified talent for specific initiatives, build diverse interdisciplinary teams and explore and locate new – or previously unknown – funding opportunities. Faculty members are invited to learn more by attending one of four Research Insight presentations scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27. Registration is available online.

CALS Study Abroad Fair Scheduled for Oct. 3
The CALS Study Abroad Fair will be held Oct. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Iowa Farm Bureau Pavilion in Kildee Hall. Program directors will have information on spring and summer programs, exchange opportunities and semester long opportunities, as well as other resources like student travel consultants and financial aid. Dairy Science Club ice cream will be served.
FundISU: Support Sought for Block and Bridle National Convention
A crowdfunding campaign has been launched in support of the Block and Bridle Club. ISU will host the 100th National Block and Bridle Convention in Ames on April 2-5, 2020. Iowa State’s club was one of four inaugural clubs to become a chapter in 1919. Contributions on FundISU, the crowdfunding site on the ISU Foundation website, will be used to fund speakers and tours. The goal is $5,000 and the campaign runs through Oct. 20. More
Students Invited to Submit Poster Abstracts for Borlaug Competition
Abstracts are being accepted for the 18th annual Norman Borlaug Lectureship Poster Competition for Graduate and Undergraduate Students preceding the Borlaug Lecture, scheduled for Oct. 14 in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Abstracts should describe work related to world issues. To be considered, complete the Borlaug Student Poster Competition submission survey by Sept. 26. You will be notified by Oct. 7 if your abstract has been selected for the poster competition. The Borlaug Poster Competition is coordinated by ISU’s Nutritional Sciences Council. More

ANR Extension Welcomes New Forestry Specialist
Billy Beck, assistant professor in natural resource ecology and management and extension forestry specialist, began his new role in August and is committed to showing Iowans the value of the forest. He has six forestry field days planned for October. More
ISU to Host National Extension Ag Agents Conference
The National Association of County Agricultural Agents, the national governing body that promotes the professional status of extension agents and agriculture specialists, will hold its annual meeting/professional improvement conference in Des Moines Aug. 13-17, 2023. As the host organization, the Iowa Agricultural Extension Association will be responsible for organizing pre-conference professional development tours, professional improvement seminars, and commercial and educational exhibits. CALS Award Nomination Deadline Nov. 19
Nominations for awards presented by CALS are due Nov. 19. The list of college awards and nominating guidelines are available online. They will be reviewed by the CALS Awards Committee during December and presented during the annual CALS Awards Ceremony, scheduled for March 24. Nominations for most awards presented by ISU need to be submitted to the college first. The college deadline for university award nominations is Nov. 19. The CALS Awards Committee will review and forward the best two to three nominations for each award. The list of university awards and nominating guidelines are available online. University awards are presented at the ISU Fall Convocation in September. The award page on the CALS website provides a complete list of awards available, frequently asked questions and a list of past recipients. Contact your departmental awards committee for additional information.
Acker, Beitz and Timms Receive Dean’s Citations for Extraordinary Contributions to CALS
Dean Robison presented three faculty members with the Dean’s Citation for Extraordinary Contributions to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the Sept. 17 fall convocation and awards reception. The first was presented to David Acker, Associate Dean for Academic and Global Programs and the Raymond and Mary Baker Chair in Global Agriculture. He received the honor for his work in helping construct a rural training center in Uganda’s Kamuli District in 2018. The second dean’s citation went to Don Beitz and Leo Timms, both animal science, for their work to establish and sustain the Think Tank on Animal Agriculture. For 20 years, the Think Tank has provided a monthly time and place to discuss agricultural topics in a casual dinner setting. Beitz is a Charles F. Curtiss Professor of animal science and Timms is a Morrill Professor in animal science.
ABE’s Koziel Honored for Peer Review Excellence
Jacek Koziel, agricultural and biosystems engineering, has received two Publons Peer Review Awards. Koziel was ranked in the top 1 percent of peer reviewers in environmental and ecology and in cross-field. The Global Peer Review Awards recognize commitment to the quality and integrity of scholarly communication. More
Zhang Talks with Wall Street Journal about African Swine Fever
Beijing has tried a variety of measures in recent weeks to bump up the pork supply and bring down prices after a yearlong outbreak of African swine fever decimated the country’s hogs, according to a Sept. 10 article in the Wall Street Journal. Wendong Zhang, economics, spoke with the Wall Street Journal about those efforts. More
Donations Needed for CALS United Way Online Auction
Donations are being accepted for the CALS United Way online auction, which will run Oct. 7-10. Contact Carla Persaud (4-1823, cpersaud@iastate.edu) with a description and picture of the item. The auction website is being developed and details will be sent at a later date. Proceeds will go to the ISU 2019 United Way Campaign.
Robison Featured on WHO Radio
Dean Robison was featured on the Sept. 18 issue of The Big Show, a farm and consumer show on 1040 WHO Radio. Robison was asked what he has learned about ISU and Iowa in his nine months on the job, challenges that he faces as dean and current views on science. More

Sept. 25: ISU’s Local Food Festival
ISU’s Local Food Festival will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in central campus. The event features educational displays, food samples, recipes using local foods developed by Iowa State dining chefs, and locally grown and produced products for sale by vendors and ISU clubs. Free bike tune-ups will also be offered. Sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach, ISU LiveGreen and ISU Dining. More

Registration is now open for the 2019 Everson Global Seed Symposium, scheduled for Oct. 14-15 in conjunction with the World Food Prize in Des Moines. Use Storytelling to Build Your Personal Brand
A faculty development workshop on “What’s Your Story: Using Storytelling to Build Your Personal Brand” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gold Room. Led by Erin Wilgenbusch, associate teaching professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, participants will explore ways to internally and externally examine their work, find their story and the tools that are available to help them share that story. NASS Releases Census of Agriculture Zip Code Tabulations
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released the 2017 Census of Agriculture data tabulated by zip code. The tabulations are available through Quick Stats, NASS’ online data query tool. Data summaries are also available at the national, state, county, congressional district, watershed and American Indian reservation level. More
FAO Reports 41 Countries Needing Food Assistance
Forty-one countries continue to need external assistance for food, according to a quarterly report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. About half of those countries are home to civil unrest or full-fledged conflict, while others face severe resource strains due to large influxes of refugees from neighboring countries experiencing unrest. Also, adverse weather conditions – particularly rainfall shortages in Africa – are acutely affecting food availability and access for millions of people. More
