Dean Robison Spends the Day in Southeast Iowa
This summer, Endowed Dean’s Chair Daniel J. Robison is participating in a series of community visits across Iowa. The first visit took place Friday, June 28, in southeast Iowa. Robison toured CALS alum and research collaborator Steve Berger’s farm near Wellman. He stopped at the ISU Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Crawfordsville, where he viewed research plots and met with current and former farm association board members, area business people, local ag educators and students, and ISU farm staff and ISU Extension and Outreach field specialists. The day ended with a reception for alumni and friends in Bettendorf. Similar trips will take place on July 9 (northeast Iowa) and July 18 (southwest Iowa).
New Tool Provides Yield and Soil Nitrogen Predictions at Field Scale
A tool developed by college agronomists, including Sotirios Archontoulis and Mark Licht, offers farmers important data to help them make decisions, including nitrogen applications in the coming weeks. The Forecast and Assessment of Cropping sysTemS (FACTS) project was launched in 2015 to provide yield and soil nitrogen predictions in Iowa at a field scale. In 2019 the tool expanded to include coverage for Illinois and Indiana. More

STRIPS Research Featured in Eastern Iowa Magazine
The CALS Science-Based Trials of Rowcrops Integrated with Prairie Strips project was featured in a recent issue of Little Village, a magazine published in eastern Iowa. Prairie strips are mentioned in the latest National Climate Assessment as a potentially important tool in improving water quality in the United States. More

New Extension Program Helps Small Farms Succeed
The new Farm, Food and Enterprise Development program through ISU Extension and Outreach offers multiple services to help small farmers succeed. The new title is the result of a merger of the Value Added Agriculture team and the Local Foods team. More

CALS communication efforts and initiatives were honored with top awards during the Association for Communication Excellence annual conference in San Antonio, Texas, June 24-27. CALS staff were presented with the following awards:
