Workday Training Now Available for Faculty and Staff
Workday training – both online and instructor-led – is now available for all faculty and staff. An article in the May 9 issue of Inside Iowa State, “Minimal Workday Training Required for Many,” provides an overview. CALS “Lightning Talks” at ISU Research Day Online
Recordings of the presentations from Iowa State Research Day on March 28 are now available online. Lightning Talk presentations include: Priyanka Jayashankar, management and Seed Science Center; and Lisa Schulte Moore, natural resource ecology and management. Story collider presentations include: Tom Brumm, agricultural and biosystems engineering; Leonor Leandro, plant pathology and microbiology; Tom Harrington, plant pathology and microbiology; and Ajay Nair, horticulture.

Crops Team and Soils Judging Team Finish Semester Strong
The CALS Crops Team recently competed in the NACTA Judging Conference at Murray State University, Ky. The crops contest consisted of an agronomic quiz, math practical, lab practical, and plant and seed identification. In the four-year division, the team placed second overall; individuals Andrew Blomme and Shannon Breja placed second and fourth overall respectively. Also, the team competed in the Knowledge Bowl and placed first in the four-year division. The Soils Judging Team recently competed in the National Soil Judging Contest in San Luis Obispo, Calif., placing seventh overall and sixth in group judging. More
CALS Hosts Study Abroad Scholarship Dinner
The CALS Global Programs Department partnered with the ISU Foundation to host the ninth annual CALS Study Abroad Scholarship Dinner on April 25. More than 60 students, donors and Iowa State faculty and staff attended. More
Hansen Center Offers Unique Opportunities for Students
The Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center is a unique, multipurpose facility with classrooms and teaching laboratories as well as space for outreach activities and a variety of functions for current and future students. Annual Conference to Address Issues Affecting Iowa Farm Values
Agricultural trade, land values and technology will highlight the Soil Management and Land Valuation Conference, scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, at 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Scheman Building. Now in its 92nd year, the conference is for farmers, rural appraisers, real estate brokers and others interested in Iowa’s land market. The conference is sponsored by CALS and ISU Extension and Outreach. More
Worker Protection Standard Training Offered for Student Employees
Betsy Buffington, pesticide safety education program specialist, will be providing Worker Protection Standard pesticide safety training daily from 8:30 to 10 a.m. this week, May 13-17, in 125 Kildee Hall. The training is geared to new student employees who need the training before starting fieldwork or anyone needing annual WPS training. Public Viewing of Seed Science Center Film Scheduled, June 16
A film showcasing the science and beauty of seeds is scheduled for a public viewing at Reiman Gardens on June 16 at 6 p.m. “Seeds! Diversity of Wonder,” was produced by Manjit Misra, director of ISU’s Seed Science Center. The film’s purpose is to make seed science accessible to a wide audience and inspire a new generation to take an interest, said Misra. It takes viewers to locations including India and Africa, as well as the Iowa State campus, the World Food Prize in Des Moines and Iowa farms. More
Youngs Recognized for Work in Kosovo
Curt Youngs, animal science, was recognized by the Kosovo Consul General Xhavit Gashi in recognition of his involvement and impactful efforts over the past eight years in Kosovo. Youngs has worked to improve the dairy cattle industry in Kosovo, educating students from the country and across the globe through his teaching at the University of Prishtina International Summer University Program. He also arranged for ISU to serve as a host institution for Kosovo American Education Fund graduate student fellows. More

Jo Anne Powell-Coffman, professor and former chair of genetics, development and cell biology, has been named associate dean for research in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. More

May 15: Iowa Learning Farms Webinar
The Iowa Learning Farms monthly webinar, scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, at 12 p.m., will address the impact of cover crops on crop yield and water quality. Emily Waring, graduate research assistant with the Agricultural Water Management research group, will present results from research at six ISU research farms. More

President Wintersteen Seeks Innovative Ideas from Undergraduate Students
ISU President Wendy Wintersteen has unveiled the “Pitch Me ISU” contest. Undergraduate students with innovative ideas are encouraged to submit a 60-second video on how that idea would change the local, regional, national or global community, create value for a specific industry or business, or change consumer experiences or practices. Accepted video clips will be displayed at the Iowa State Fair and the winner will be awarded $1,000.
Exploring a Precision Livestock Farming Initiative
The Office of the Vice President of Research is bringing together interested parties from across the university to explore forming a Precision Livestock Farming Initiative, a transdisciplinary effort involving researchers, industry and farmer partners. The goal is to develop teams that can address all aspects of precision livestock farming and successfully apply for funding. This emerging topic intersects economic, ethical, societal and environmental aspects of applying data science to animal agriculture and genomics, production animal health and welfare, food science, monitoring technology, bioinformatics and workforce development.
