Why did you choose to attend Iowa State?

I chose Iowa State University because of the beautiful campus and the welcoming advisors and professors.

What extracurricular activities have you been involved in as a student?

I have been involved in the Microbiology Club as the treasurer. I also organized high school workshops for outreach within the Micro Club. I have been involved in stem cell research in Dr. Donald Sakaguchi’s lab and served as a supplemental instructor and lab assistant.

What has been your favorite class and why?

My favorite class has been medical microbiology, taught by Dr. Joan Cunnick. I loved the case studies we discussed, and Dr. Cunnick is an amazing professor.

Who has positively impacted your time at Iowa State?

My best friend, Kelsa Bartels, has been my rock throughout college. I met her at Iowa State, and we’ve been best friends ever since.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

The best advice I have received is to enjoy college and hang out with your friends because time goes by fast.

What is one thing you’re most proud of?

I am very proud of the research and teaching opportunities I have participated in at Iowa State. I am also proud of the high school workshops I helped plan.

What is one takeaway from your time at Iowa State?

One takeaway I have learned from my time at Iowa State is to trust in your ability to deal with whatever comes at you. There will be many highs but those will come with some lows. All those experiences will make you stronger and more confident in your abilities.

What is the best advice you would give an underclassman?

The best advice I would give an underclassman is to talk to your professors. Also, don’t put too much pressure on yourself because you will figure things out, even if it doesn’t go how you planned.

How has Iowa State prepared you for your future career?

My time at Iowa State has made me more confident and provided me with the skills to be successful in my career.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I will be working as a research associate in the Bracewell lab at Indiana University. After my gap year, I plan on applying to medical school to go on and become a physician.
