AMES, Iowa – The Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute at Iowa State University, home of the Iowa State University Winery, is proud to announce the launch of the Iowa State University Cidery. The Cidery introduced its first hard ciders this fall at the Iowa State Parks Library’s Centennial Celebration. The ciders are now available to purchase at Cyclone Liquors in Ames.

Erin Norton, Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute director, and her team have been out promoting the new ciders at various events.

Building on the Winery’s success, the Cidery highlights MGWII’s commitment to research, education and outreach, and innovation. All fruit used to produce the ciders is grown locally at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station, reinforcing the program’s dedication to Iowa and value-added agriculture.

The Cidery’s inaugural products are:

  • Original Cider: crisp and lightly sweet, apple-forward with a refreshing finish
  • Carbonated Cider and Rosé Wine: pretty and pink; a marriage between Rosé wine and apples, slightly sweet

Student employees played an integral role in the creation, production and marketing of these new ciders. Ella Janssen, a senior in graphic design, designed the Cidery’s labels and brand imagery, bringing the new beverages’ look to life.

“I’m very pleased with how the ciders have turned out,” said Erin Norton, MGWII director. “I think they are a great addition to our wine products and highlight some of the collaborations that we have on campus.”

Norton also said this initiative serves as a mechanism for generating funding to further support the Institute’s research endeavors.
