Q&A with Sydney Septer, club president
What are the goals and missions of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Club?
The mission of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Club is to provide opportunities for Iowa State students beyond what they experience in the classroom. We bring in industry professionals to share their agricultural communication stories to encourage members to explore their passions and become aware of opportunities.
When and where does the club meet?
ACT meets every other Tuesday in 105 Curtiss Hall. Dinner and a social start at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting follows at 7 p.m. Meetings include industry speakers and breakout sessions for committees to collaborate.
What opportunities does the club have for students to get involved? Leadership?
Through ACT, members gain exposure to collegiate involvement, internship opportunities and the ability to attend national conferences. The club has an officer team made up of eight students who plan events and meetings. There are numerous committees that students can be involved in as well. CALS Connections is a magazine created by ACT members. This is a great opportunity for students to get real writing and designing experience before entering full-time employment.
What are some club events, activities or fundraisers?
Members can attend the Agricultural Media Summit, the National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow Professional Development Conference and the National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention. Each year, the club plans an industry tour. In 2024, students toured the Iowa Corn Association, Iowa Pork Producers and Lessing Flynn. In 2025, the club plans on collaborating with the South Dakota State University ACT chapter for industry and university tours.
Who can join the club? Are there any requirements?
Anyone can join ACT; we encourage everyone who has an interest in sharing the story of agriculture to join and get involved!
What makes the ACT Club fun and unique?
ACT offers firsthand experience in fields within agricultural communication. The club provides opportunities students cannot find in the classroom and exposure to the industry you can’t find anywhere else.
Is there anything else you want to share about the club?
There are some new and upcoming changes happening in the club; we are hoping to give our members more opportunities to get involved and gain experience.
