Interested in getting your hands on some Iowa State University dairy science history?

Vintage milk cans used by the dairy science department in the 1950s and 1960s will be available for purchase during the ISU Surplus sale Wednesday, July 22. The sale will take place at the Surplus Facility, 925 Airport Road, in Ames, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Face coverings are required of anyone entering the facility.

The 28 milk cans are embossed with “ISU,” as well as a date, and can hold up to 5 gallons. Each can will be sold for $200-350, depending on its condition. Proceeds from the sale of the milk cans will be put toward the new Iowa State University Creamery, set to open Aug. 21, and located on the second floor of the Food Sciences Building.

Operated by the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, the creamery will serve the purpose of training students and providing them with skills needed for future careers in dairy science and food science. Students will learn to make the ice cream sold at the creamery, with each ice cream flavor paying homage to Iowa State in some way.

Iowa State’s original campus creamery was in operation from 1927-1969, and was nationally known for producing high-quality dairy products. It was closed as result of changes in Iowa’s dairy industry.
