“For the past 18 years, the Leopold Center has been pleased to work with the Spencer family to present this award to deserving Iowans in agriculture,” said Mark Rasmussen, Leopold Center director. “All the past winners have shared a desire to improve Iowa’s landscape.”

The award, established in 2001 by an endowment from the Spencer family, is administered by the center. The 2019 award includes a $1,000 cash prize.

The Spencer Award honors the beliefs, innovations and stewardship of Norman and Margaretha Spencer, who farmed near Sioux City for 40 years. The Spencers believed that it is the obligation of each generation to leave the world a better and healthier place.
