The Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences graduating class will hold its convocation ceremony on Dec. 17 at 9:30 a.m. in CY Stephens Auditorium in Ames.
This year’s graduates will include five outstanding senior award winners. The winners include Rebecca Clay, Shelby Fields, Leah Gilman, Alexander Paul and Nettie Payne.
Rebecca Clay received the Outstanding Senior Award. The award is given to students who excel in service, leadership and scholarship. Clay will graduate with both a degree in agronomy and globalresource systems. Clay,who is from Le Mars, Iowa, also will represent the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as the student marshal at the Iowa State University Commencement ceremony at 1:30 p.m. in HiltonAuditorium. After graduation, Clay will work on food security as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal.
Shelby Fields received the Outstanding Leadership Excellence Award. The award is based on a student’s involvement with clubs and organizations. Fields has been active with the Block and Bridle Club, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council and various internships. Fields is from Newman, California and will graduate with a degree in animal science.Leah Gilman received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award. The award recognizes students for their cumulative grade point average, scholarships, honors as well as number of semesters on the dean’s list. Gilman was involved with the Bacon Expo, the Block and Bridle Club, the Food Science Club and the Women in Science And Engineering program. Gilman is from Stuart, Iowa and will graduate with a degree in food science.
Alexander Paul received the Distinguished Service Award. The award is based on a student’s commitment to service to the community on and off campus while at Iowa State. Paul is a volunteer firefighter and trained emergency medical technician, which requires hours of training and commitment to responding to emergency calls. Paul is from Boulder, Colorado and will graduate with a degree in animal science.
Nettie Payne received the Outstanding Ambassador of Agriculture award. The award is given to students showing an exceptional effort to build positive relationships between the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the community. Payne has been involved in the Bacon Expo, Collegiate FFA and Sigma Alpha. She is from Altoona, Iowa and will graduate with a degree in agricultural and life sciences education.
