Intern Gains Experience with USDA

Carissa Villanueva is from Des Moines, Iowa and is currently attending Roosevelt High School. Villanueva is working with Dan Andersen, an agricultural and biosystems engineering assistant professor as well as collaborator with the USDA, researching swine manure management. Villanueva enjoys having the ability to work in two lab settings, both the USDA and Dr. Andersen’s lab, as well as all of the knowledge she is gaining from hands-on experience.

How do you think this experience will help you with your future goals?
“This experience is giving me a leg up in having experience in the lab.”

What words of advice do you have for someone who has a passion for science?
“Try every field you’re interested in because even if you realize you don’t like it, that
will help you narrow down your interests.”

What is your favorite summertime food?
“Snow cones, sweet corn and tomatoes.”

Where do you wish to travel?
“The Aztec temples in and around Mexico City.”
