Isabel Casas is from Des Moines, Iowa and currently attends Des Moines East High School. Casas is working with Shuizhang Fei, a horticulture professor, and Yang Liu, a horticulture research assistant, researching the different functions of genes in switchgrass. Casas says it’s interesting to physically alter and find the functions of each gene. While Casas is unsure of her future degree, she has gained an understanding of agriculture from this experience.
What words of advice for someone who has a passion for science?
“To be aware of your interests within science and always be open to new field
options in science.”
If you could have one superpower related to science, what would it be?
“Photographic memory.”
Who is your role model and why?
“My mother because she is a very strong independent woman and I aspire to be like
her.”
Where do you wish to travel?
“Singapore.”
What is one thing you’d like to scratch off of your bucket list?
“Bungee Jumping.”
