Following Passion for Genetics

Fahmo Mohamed is from Des Moines, Iowa and recently graduates from North High School. Mohamed is working with Ping Kang, a genetics, development and cell biology assistant scientist, researching fruit fly gene expression. Mohamed says she enjoys working with her lab partners. Mohamed has plans to attend Iowa State in the fall and study genetics and become a genetics counselor in the future.

What advice do you have for someone who has a passion for science?
“Go out there and explore because there are so many opportunities. However, it’s
your responsibility to find and use them.”

How do you think this experience will help you with your future goals?
“This experience will greatly influence my future because it’s exposing me to
research, which I’ll be doing a lot of in college.”

What is your favorite summertime food?
“Ice cream cake.”

What do you like most about Ames?
“You can walk almost everywhere.”
