Daimer Castro Vega is from Dorado, Puerto Rico and currently attends the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Castro Vega is working with Jean Batzer and Yuba Kaudel, assistant scientists in plant pathology and microbiology, studying soybean seedling diseases as well as insecticide and seed treatments. Castro Vega is enjoying the experience and hopes to pursue a doctorate degree in plant pathology.
What advice do you have for someone who has a passion for science?
"Work hard. Every person has the ability to learn you just have to find what works best for you. Also, always go with the choice that scares you the most because that’s the one that will help you grow.”
Who is your role model and why?
"My grandfather, Felix. He always believes in me and encourages me to help my community. He taught me to have integrity and to respect others.”
Where do you hope to travel someday?
“Patagonia, Argentina.”
How has your perception of Iowa changed?
“People used to tell me it was just a lot of fields; yes it is, but with a lot of beautiful animals, nice people and a lot of awesome landscapes.”
What is your favorite thing about Ames?
"I like walking on campus in the afternoons and seeing chipmunks, squirrels, bunnies and raccoons. I also like laying in the grass under the shade of a tree and playing soccer in Lied field.”
