AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University Agricultural Business Club won two major awards at the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) conference in Minneapolis in July.
The club was named National Outstanding Chapter for the eighth time in the last nine years. The students also won the Creative Club Award. Jacob Stapp, a May 2014 business economics graduate, placed third in the undergraduate paper competition.
The Iowa State Agricultural Business Club is one of the largest and most active clubs on campus with 240 members. The club organizes a variety of professional development, service and social activities to help members learn about career opportunities in agriculture and develop leadership skills.
In addition to meetings, some of the club's events include a fall industry tour, an ag career day panel discussion, a banquet, an alumni homecoming breakfast, a roadside cleanup project, the SS-AAEA professional meetings and a golf tournament.
The club is an Iowa State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences undergraduate student organization advised by Ron Deiter, an economics professor; Georgeanne Artz, an assistant professor of economics; and Amy Brandau, an economics advisor.
Iowa State faculty and students also received the following awards at the AAEA meeting:
- Emeritus Professor Mike Duffy was honored as the outgoing secretary-treasurer, AAEA Extension section.
- Associate Professor Chad Hart received the Distinguished Extensions/Outreach Program Award for an individual with less than 10 years of experience. He also received the Outstanding Crop Forecaster Award, AAEA section.
- Assistant Professor Lee Schulz received the Outstanding Livestock Forecaster Award, AAEA Extension section.
- Graduate student Matthew Clancy and Professor GianCarlo Moschini received the Outstanding Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy Article Award. The title of their work is: "Incentives for Innovation: Patents, Prizes and Research Contracts."
- Graduate student Jonathan McFadden was awarded the Chester O. McCorkle Junior Student Scholarship.
