AMES, Iowa — The late-summer field days at Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms beginning Aug. 28 will deal with crop production issues as harvest approaches.
The field days are open to the public free of charge, and take place rain or shine.
The Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm at 3321 290th St. near Nashua will begin its field day at 1 p.m. Aug. 28. Refreshments will be served.
On Aug. 30, the Agricultural Engineering/Agronomy Research Farm near Boone will be the site of a field day including cover crop research and water quality topics. The program extends from 9 a.m. to noon with lunch following. It is located at 1308 U Ave., Boone. On Sept. 4, Dordt College’s Agriculture Stewardship Center will host a field day in association with the Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm. It will begin at 6 p.m. and include a dinner. The center is located two miles north of the college’s Sioux Center campus on Highway 75.
On Sept. 10, the McNay Memorial Research and Demonstration Farm near Chariton will host its field day at 4:30 p.m. with a meal to follow. It is located at 45249 170th Ave., Chariton; 4 miles south on Highway 65 from the intersection of highways 65 and 34, then 2.5 miles east on a gravel road and north .25 mile.
The McNay farm contains livestock and those visiting it are asked to take a few precautions: change clothing and footwear after being at another livestock operation; and refrain from bringing any food items to the farm. Those who have recently returned from a trip abroad are asked to wait five days before visiting the farm. On Sept. 12, the Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Crawfordsville will host a field day beginning at 1:30 p.m. The farm is located 2 miles east of Crawfordsville on the Washington/Louisa county-line road at 3115 Louisa-Washington Rd.
